TITLE: Operating Journeyman Engineer III


POSITION INFORMATION: Under minimal supervision, monitors and inspects equipment.  Operates the steam and chilled water plant by adjusting and controlling steam and chilled water, and performing water tests and analysis.  Performs routine maintenance on equipment.  Maintains logs of operation, maintenance and safety activities.




  • Plant Maintenance.  Monitors and inspects equipment to detect leaks or malfunctions and ensures the equipment is operating efficiently and safely.  Identifies problems with equipment and discusses with the supervisor what type of maintenance is required before maintenance is performed.

  • Plant Operation. Operates the steam and chilled water plant generation equipment including boilers, chillers, and cooling towers.  Adjusts and controls the generation of steam and chilled water to ensure maximum efficiency of plant operations.  Observes and interprets readings on gauges, meters, and charts to ensure the boilers are operating properly.

  • Water Analysis.  Tests boiler water quality and takes any corrective action, such as mixing and adding chemicals to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits.

  • Analysis.  Analyzes problems and takes appropriate action to ensure continuous operation of equipment and systems.  Discusses more complex problems with supervisor.

  • Records.  Maintains logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including but not limited to test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work.

  •  Employee Training.  May train other employees in plant operations and safety procedures.

  • Essential Employee.  Keeps the plant operational when the university is closed and in case of steam and chill plant emergencies.  

  • As Needed.  Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the functions of any site support position to include assisting any skilled trade.


    Job Requirements


    Education:  High School diploma or GED


    Experience:  Have at least 2 years' verifiable experience in the operation or assisting in the operation of boilers exceeding 15 psig steam or 160 psig water pressure or 250 degree F water temperature and refrigeration or air conditioning units exceeding 150 tons

    Certifications/ Licenses:  Unlimited First Class Stationary Engineer License. Valid Oklahoma Driver's License.

    Boilerhouse exposure and environment. 

    Frequent exposure (16% to 50%) to physical stress, high noise level or discomfort.
