Anchored at the University of Oklahoma, Startup OU is an entrepreneurship hub that fosters and champions the next generation of entrepreneurs and emerging talent. Our organization serves as an entry point into the University of Oklahoma, state, and regional startup ecosystems; a connection point for startup founders and university resources and talent; and a launch point for university-affiliated and community startups into the state and regional economies. 

The Startup OU Marketing Manager will lead community outreach and event planning for Startup OU. The Marketing Manager reports to the Startup OU Director. The Marketing Manager will provide strategic leadership around engaging and developing the Startup OU Community, connecting aspiring, first-time, and experienced entrepreneurs, student workforce, academic researchers, and ecosystem partners through outreach, events, competitions, and other activities. The Marketing Manager will also lead operations for Startup OU’s content lab, including the management of production equipment inventory and a small content creation team of paid and unpaid student workforce. The Marketing Manager will work closely with other Innovation Hub-affiliated organizations, such as the OU Fabrication Lab, the OU Price College of Business marketing and communications team, and the OU central marketing team to share and coordinate Startup OU’s marketing and outreach activities.

  • Lead the development, implementation, and evaluation of community-focused events, competitions, and other similar activities
  • Manage day-to-day operations of Startup OU’s content lab, including equipment inventory, student workforce, and external client projects
  • Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to foster organizational growth
  • Initiate, coordinate, and evaluate program awareness and education initiatives, conducted either solely by Startup OU or in partnership with mission-aligned community organizations
  • Conduct outreach through social media and other online channels, community events (including public speaking and networking), and direct outreach to applicable organizations or individuals
  • Promote brand awareness through consistent messaging and storytelling across various digital and traditional platforms
  • Craft stories that elevates Startup OU’s reputation and builds brand recognition
  • Build relationships with and pitch stories to local, regional, and national media
  • Interface with university departments, funding organizations, external organizations, and state and federal government agencies
  • Perform various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position
 

Job Requirements

Required Education and Experience: Bachelors degree in Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, or related field, AND;

  • 48 months in marketing, public relations, communications or related experience

Equivalency Substitution: Will accept 48 months of related experience in lieu of the Bachelors degree for a total of 96 months related experience.

Skills:

  • Well-versed in copywriting, graphic design, new media, and brand management
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite
  • Skilled in Microsoft Office, with a strong knowledge of Word and Powerpoint
  • Excellent organizational skills with keen attention to detail
  • Proficient in composing or presenting oral and written communication
  • Strong networking skills and able to build relationships with other relevant stakeholders
  • Confidence in facilitating client consultations and discussions to execute deliverables
  • Ability to lead and organization community events, including speaker events and workshops, as well as larger conferences, competitions, and other similar events
  • Ability to work independently with modest supervision
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize multiple projects, often with shifting priorities and requiring collaboration across many departments
  • Highly receptive to feedback and coaching
  • Demonstrate curiosity, creativity, and a drive for excellence

Departmental Preferences:

  • Master’s Degree
  • Experience in public relations, marketing, or other communications role for a nonprofit, educational institution, or entrepreneurial support organization
  • Project management
  • Proficient understanding of professional photography/videography equipment and editing software
