Position Summary
The Standardized Patient (part-time) is trained to portray the role of a patient, family member or other to allow student learners to practice physical exam skills, history taking skills, communication skills and other exercises.
Standardized Patients will often be physically examined by students and faculty as part of the medical students learning experience. This position must maintain a professional manner when interacting with students, faculty, supervisors, peers, and UIW partners. The Standardized Patient reports to the Clinical Outreach and Standardized Patient Manager.
The Standardized Patient (part-time) works on an as needed basis and may work a few times per year or a few times per month. This position is located at University of Incarnate Word’s School of Osteopathic Medicine at Brooks City Base in South San Antonio, TX.

Description of Job Duties
  • Portrays characteristics of a real patient, simulating the signs and symptoms of particular patient cases.
  • Incorporates feedback from facilitators for case simulation learning purposes.
  • Reviews and prepares for case assignments in advance for practice ahead of the clinical learning event.
  • Repeatedly simulates the patient case as needed so physical examination maneuvers can be performed by student learners.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Will be required to wear a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath to simulate a real-life patient.
  • Will be physically examined by students and faculty as part of the medical student’s learning experience.
  • Will be required to be video and audio recorded and/or observed live through an observation window or video monitor.
  • Will be asked to simulate all aspects of health scenarios, including the medical history of the current problem, affect/behavior and physical findings, in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner.

Description of Job Duties
  • Will be required to be video and audio recorded.
  • Will present in casual attire to represent a patient participating in a telemedicine patient case scenario.
  • Will be asked to simulate all aspects of health scenarios, including the medical history of the current problem, affect/behavior, and physical findings, in a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner.
  • Must be able to adapt to computer-based teleconference software, use a web camera, microphone and speakers or headset, and learn web-based simulation software to access patient case scenarios, training materials, and other relevant information.

  • Ability to work remotely when needed using a laptop or desktop computer (no mobile phone or notebook devices) to access web-based software for telemedicine and training purposes.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.

Required Education
High School Diploma or equivalent.
Required Work Experience
Some prior work experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience as a standardized patient in a medical school environment.

Work Hours
This position involves flexible hours so applicants must be available as needed. Some work assignments are provided last minute; therefore, applicants should be available with short notice of job assignment.
Physical Demands
Must be able to sit and/or lay upon an examining table with reasonable accommodation.
