Normal Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am to 5:00pm; some evenings & weekends required and on-call crisis intervention services rotation


Job Summary: The Staff Therapist I provides clinical services to clients.


Additional Department Summary: The Staff Therapist is centrally located within at the Counseling Center and serves as a member of both the Crisis and Consultation Specialist team and the Embedded Counselor team to provide coverage and clinical support for these areas as needed and able. Provides clinical, consultative, and crisis intervention services to students. Provides individual and group counseling. Conducts consultation to students, staff, faculty, administrators, parents, and families. Trains students in the mental health professions as needed. Rotates on-call throughout the year for the purpose of crisis intervention services. This position is a part of the UA Counseling Center and will report to the Associate Director Counseling Center, Clinical and Outreach Services. Participates in case management and supervision within the Counseling Center.

Works with people in distress and encounters life-threatening emergencies routinely. Intervenes with a student who is acutely suicidal and making threats in their residential area. Maintains knowledge of and adheres to all policies and procedures as contained in the Counseling Center Policy and Procedure Manual. Follows Quality Improvement standards. Completes required training and promotes a safe, hospitable, and respectful workplace. Works after-hours as needed.


Required Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree or higher in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work. Must be licensure eligible in the State of Alabama.


Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in a mental-health related field such as counseling, psychology or social work. Must be licensure eligible in the state of Alabama and obtain their license at the level of an independent practitioner within two (2) years of hire.


Skills and Knowledge: High degree of sophistication of thought and creativity due to the complex nature of human problems. Excellent judgment, problem solving, and a thorough knowledge of the myriad factors behind the resolution of psychological problems. Ability to continually demonstrate exemplary attitudes and performance in the areas of teamwork and proactively assisting all constituencies within the scope of the Counseling Center mission. Excellent human relations, advocacy, and mental health intervention skills. Superior time and task management skills. Ability to use departmental resources to stay up to date on customer needs. Effective verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work flexible and evening hours. Ability to use sound judgment and competence in managing critical incidents and communications with others. Basic computer skills (word processing, email, etc.). Ability to effectively interact with University community members for the purpose of program development.

Preferred Qualifications: College or University counseling center experience. Master’s degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work and one and a half (1.5) years of experience in consultation services, group therapy, teaching, outreach, student work, or case management. Related student or Graduate Assistant, intern, or student-oriented experience will be considered.
