Description of Work Unit
The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance (SMTD) has 43 tenured and tenure-track faculty as well as 51 contract, continuing and adjunct faculty. There are currently over 550 students in SMTD, with 375 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in music degree programs.

Position Summary
Colorado State University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance is seeking a Staff Theatrical House Electrician.
We seek a Staff Theatrical House Electrician with experience in theatre, dance, music, and opera, to train and supervise electric shop staff and safely deliver our main-stage Theatre, dance and Opera productions, currently consisting of three fully produced plays, one opera concert, one fully produced opera, one fully- produced musical, a “workshop” level Freshman project (no major scenic elements), one organ concert, and five dance concerts (with limited scenic elements) and other one-off events. CSU productions are designed by faculty and students; willingness to work with and train developing talent is essential. This position provides practical training and supervision for the CSU Music, Theatre and Dance Practicum (TH186/TH286/TH386/TH486, D286) sections. They may help assist with TH 161 Stagecraft labs as collaborated with TH 161 instructor as well as TH264 Lighting Design 1 and associated labs in collaboration with the TH264 instructor. Students enrolled in these courses are seeking Bachelors of the Arts degrees in Theatre (Design and Technology, Performance and Musical Theatre), Music or Dance. Up to 80% of their time is spent working with and training music, theatre and dance students. They may also be asked to serve on various committees to help in season planning, recruit and retention of students, or to better the School of Music, Theatre and Dance. This position requires some evening and weekend calls, as needed.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor degree (BA, BFA) in Theatre, Theatre Design and Production emphasis.
  • Knowledge and experience in technical areas of theatre lighting and projections; basic computer and digital media skills.
  • Experience with ETC EOS family lighting consoles, and associated networking.
  • Knowledge of Computer Aided Drafting software for lighting (Vectorworks and/or WYSIWYG, Lightwright)
  • Ability to interact well with others and speak and understand common vocabulary among artisans is a must. Evidence of organization, self-motivation, and self-sufficiency.
  • Physical strength, coordination, and flexibility (must climb ladders / trestles and be able to lift over 50 lbs); must be able to work at any height on ladders (including trestle style i.e. “a-frame”), Genie personnel lifts, scaffolding, and a wide variety of catwalks.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • MFA degree in Theatre, or Theatre Design and Production emphasis.
  • At least two years of electrics experience in an academic theatre setting.
  • ETCP (Entertainment Technology Certification Program) (Certification is an advantage but is not required.)

  • The Staff Theatrical House Electrician is the direct supervisor the lighting / projection crew, stage electricians, the lighting / projection board operators, and is directly responsible to the lighting/projection designer and Lighting/Projection Design Faculty for the installation and maintenance of the lighting/projection design, including assembling lighting/projection equipment, supervising hang and focus, installation of special equipment such as automated luminaries, digital show control, special effects lighting and all power distribution.
  • The Staff Theatrical House Electrician must also be conversant on all lighting/projection equipment and control consoles, as well as current trends in software and technologies, which requires constant research, practice, and improvement of skills.
  • The position is responsible for the maintenance, repair and ordering of parts, lamps, cable, gobos, lighting filters, the entire lighting and projection inventory, with special attention to safety lines and backups and liability. Will communicate all maintenance, upgrades, and electrical needs to the Production Manager and generate quotes as needed for possible funding.
  • The Staff Theatrical House Electrician is responsible for the coordination of the cues with the lighting designer/projection designer, the Lighting/Projection Design Faculty, stage manager, and associated board operators, and is on-call for any problems that arise during technical rehearsals and performance.
  • They are the ultimate authority responsible for the programming and operation of the lighting control console during the production, as well as channel, color and focus check every evening before the performance. They are also responsible for current copies and backups of all soft (computer) and hard (printed copies) information for the design. Especially critical during cue to cue rehearsals and the weeks from production hang and through tech weeks, dress rehearsals, opening and run.
  • They will work closely with the Faculty Head of lighting/projections on all production deadlines. This position reports directly to the Production Manager of MTD.
