Position Summary
Washington University School of Medicine is at the forefront of innovative medical research, dedicated to advancing healthcare solutions. We are seeking a highly qualified Staff Scientist to join our dynamic team and contribute to groundbreaking research projects.
As a Staff Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in two research projects, each offering a unique opportunity to make significant contributions to medical practice in the near future.
Project 1: Computational Modeling for Drug Formulation
• Utilize computational models and tools to lead the development of novel drug formulation processes.
• Apply simulation techniques to address research problems related to fluid flows and multiphase flows in new drug formulations.
• Preferably, be familiar with Comsol software for effective modeling.
Project 2: Machine Learning for Medical Image Analysis
• Apply machine learning techniques for feature extraction from medical images, including MRI and ultrasound.
• Build CNN pipelines to enable seamless integration of human and artificial intelligence.
• Develop a comprehensive approach to leverage both visual and textual information using advanced AI techniques to enhance decision-making in the future medical practice, particularly in predicting disease progression and evaluating the effectiveness of early therapeutic interventions
This position designs research protocols and assists in developing and conducting research projects, including experiment design, data analysis and documentation of experiment results.


Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data.
  • Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
  • Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
  • Documents research topics and prepares and submits papers based on research work to publications and committees for publication or presentation to peers.
  • Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
  • Conducts literature searches related to research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

Works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. Must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in computer science or engineering.
  • Strong background in computational modeling and simulation.
  • Proficient in machine learning tools and languages, including Pytorch, Tensorflow, Python, and C++.
  • Demonstrated experience in building CNN pipelines for medical image analysis.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and ability to drive research projects independently.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills within a multidisciplinary team.


Required Qualifications

PhD or master’s degree with 4 years of experience in research lab operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 9 years.

Salary Range
$47,000.00 - $85,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
