Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division invites applications for a Staff Scientist to join the newly established Quantum Information Science Enabled Discovery (QuantISED) program. The QuantISED thrust in High Energy Physics (HEP) is intended to forge new routes to scientific discovery along the HEP mission and P5 science drivers. A key objective is interdisciplinary development that positively impacts both HEP and QIS fields.
Two main areas of near term involvement are possible: 1) applications of quantum computing to HEP problems, including the simulation of quantum field theories, interference effects in QCD calculations of many particle final states, and solving combinatorial problems like pattern recognition in future tracking detectors, and 2) development of sensor technology to reach single quantum sensitivity in the meV range with near zero dark counts, to enable future low mass dark matter searches. The successful candidate is expected to take on a leading role in one of these two areas. Involvement in other Physics Division activities at up to 50% time is possible, subject to funding availability. In both cases the candidate is expected to help define future directions.
In the area of quantum computing our current research is to develop quantum algorithms that can simulate quantum field theories, simulate interference effects in QCD calculations, and to improve particle tracking in future detectors. The candidate will have the opportunity to participate in the development of new directions at the intersection of quantum computing and particle physics, engaging with research in LBNL’s Computing Sciences Area. Candidates should have experience in particle physics research, with a knowledge of quantum field theory or particle tracking. Experience with simulation tools such as qiskit, pyquil etc. is preferred but not required.
In the area of quantum sensors our current research includes novel superconducting device design, prototyping and fabrication, and engaging with vendors and technology transfer as needed. Development includes planning and executing experiments to demonstrate performance using specialized equipment within the division and elsewhere, such as dilution refrigerators, SQUID and parametric amplifiers, cryogenic CMOS electronics, etc.. Expertise in the operation and setup of dilution refrigerators and cryogenic instrumentation is preferred but not required, as is experience with testing or fabrication of Transition Edge Sensors, Kinetic Inductance Detectors, Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors, other quantum sensors, or superconducting qubits.
A Ph.D. in Physics or equivalent is required, with five years or more experience in research (at least two post-PhD), including two or more years of experience relevant to quantum computation and/or superconducting device development. The staff scientist is expected to engage collaborators in other LBNL divisions, campus, or other institutes, as appropriate; to mentor postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students involved in the project; to seek out interns and visiting students as needed; and to lead publication of results. The career-track Staff Scientist position is a five-year appointment with the expectation of promotion to a career position as a Staff Scientist. Exceptionally qualified scientists may be considered for a more senior level position dependent upon qualifications.
