Our dedicated and compassionate faculty and staff are driven by a common mission: Contribute to innovative approaches in predicting, preventing, and curing diseases, shaping the future of medicine through cutting-edge research.

The Research Development Scientist position will be responsible for high quality written scientific documents for funding applications, publications, and clinical trials, including but not limited to editing grant proposals, scientific manuscripts for peer review, clinical trial protocols, and other scientific documents.  You will also be expected to assist with updating templates and boilerplate language for grant proposals. You will work closely with laboratory and clinical researchers within the Women’s Cancers Program to facilitate the development and enhancement of extramural grant proposals, peer-reviewed manuscripts, and clinical trial protocols.

As a successful candidate, you will:

·         Grant Proposal and Manuscript Editing: Review editorial and scientific/technical aspects, edit/write portions of the text, and frame the project as appropriate for the specific application. You will consult with and advise faculty in the design and preparation of new projects for funding and help identify and match investigators to appropriate grant opportunities. You will also assist in the planning and development of multi-project proposals as well as in integrating the science and ensuring logical connections among the multiple components.

·         Data Presentation: Work with investigators to ensure the clarity and accuracy of data presented, as well as the interpretation of results. You will contribute to the aesthetic aspects of data and text presentation, including formatting of text (to required specifications) and refinement of clear, appealing data figures, graphics, and treatment schemas.

·         Develop In-depth Knowledge of Women’s Cancers Program and Areas of Emphasis: Expected to become well-versed in the terminology, biology, and treatments associated with the faculty researchers with whom they work and the departments those investigators are housed in. You will attend institutional research forums and symposia and seminars, and relevant retreats, seminars, and conferences to gain a thorough familiarity with the ongoing research interests of the faculty in the Women’s Cancers Program.

·         Clinical Protocol Writing and Submission: Work with the protocol design team (laboratory and clinical investigators, biostatisticians, research nurses, investigational pharmacists) on clinical trial design and protocol preparation for investigator-initiated early-phase clinical trials. You will interface with Research Support Services to develop consent forms. For translational projects involving a City of Hope-held Investigational New Drug Application (IND), they will provide and review text and figures for IND submission.

·         Teaching: Assist with planning and conducting educational courses and workshops on grantsmanship and scientific writing.

·         Other Activities: Assist with various projects involving scientific documents (e.g., annual/occasional reports on scientific activities within the institution, templates, and standard institutional text for research proposals).

·         PhD within biology, biochemistry, or other life science or a Master’s degree with at least three years of scientific writing/editing experience, clinical study design, or clinical trial regulatory experience in a healthcare/research/academic environment.

·         Experience with NIH or DOD research grant writing (R01 level, not post-doctoral fellowships), involvement with human observational or therapeutic studies, protocol design/writing for human sample, observational/retrospective or therapeutic studies. Familiarity with data analysis techniques, graphing methods, and interpretation of laboratory and clinical data.

·         Excellent scientific writing, organizational, and interpersonal skills are key.

·         Proficiency in use of Microsoft Word, EndNote, Excel and Powerpoint.
