Position Summary
The Semenkovich laboratory uses both animal and cell culture models to study lipid metabolism and how it affects diabetes and its complications including vascular disease. We are seeking a dedicated and responsible individual to design research protocols in the lab, assist with developing and conducting research projects, including experiment design, data analysis and documentation of experiment results with the primary focus being mouse husbandry tasks. Job duties will include managing a mouse colony, including establishing breeding cages, monitoring for pregnancies, weaning mice, genotyping mice, and others. Additional techniques used commonly include diabetes metabolic phenotyping such as glucose tolerance testing and insulin tolerance testing. Previous experience with mice is preferred, but appropriate applicants can be trained in commonly used techniques.
Job Description
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Following instructions and discussions with the principal investigator, designs research protocols, including developing procedures for the collection, verification and management of data.
- Assists with grant preparation and reporting.
- Performs complex statistical analysis of data collected and writes interpretative reports. Verifies the correctness of the data submitted and makes recommendations based on these analyses.
- Solves practical problems relating to difficulties with equipment or test subjects. Suggests technical or procedural improvements in testing methods.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with experimental mouse work, including husbandry, breeding, animal handling, and tissue collection.
- Commitment to keeping careful records of mice, DNA samples, and genotyping results.
- Ability to manage animals humanely in accordance with all applicable regulations.
- Experience with small animal surgery.
Required Qualifications
PhD or master’s degree with 4 years of experience in research lab operations; or equivalent combination of education and experience equaling 9 years.

Salary Range
$47,000.00 - $85,200.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
