Position Summary
The Hengen Laboratory is seeking a staff scientist. The Hengen Lab is a systems and computational neuroscience group broadly interested in the fundamental principles of reliable computation in the intact brain. The Hengen Lab takes a multidisciplinary approach to addressing scientific questions; the lab is enriched in high-density multi-site in vivo single unit electrophysiology in freely behaving animals, cellular neuroscience (patch clamp), and computational/theoretical neuroscience.
This position will be embedded centrally in a creative and multidisciplinary team. Ideally, the staff scientist will function to drive multiple projects forward and support the experimental branch of the lab in general. This position assists in developing and conducting research projects, including experimental design, data analysis and documentation of experimental results.


Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform neurosurgery and related tasks (fabrication, animal care, etc.).
  • Design and fabrication of experimental equipment.
  • Perform data processing.
  • Complete wet-lab procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological and chemical hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in neurosurgery or related field.
  • Extensive experience that will translate to challenging neurosurgical applications (in rodents).
  • Ability to solve engineering related problems (designing and producing custom devices with 3D printing, microelectronics, etc.) as well as optimizing standard neuroscience wet lab procedures.
  • Experience with surgery, physiology, animal care, and proficiency with tinkering.


Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with four years of experience in research lab operations or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling nine years.

Salary Range
$44,700.00 - $81,200.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
