Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The successful candidate will conduct experiments, modeling and analysis in the area of core and edge physics. In addition, the candidate will support and maintain the operation of the NSTX-U charge exchange recombination spectroscopy and edge rotation diagnostics, which measure ion temperature, flow velocity, and impurity density profiles. The candidate will be based onsite in Princeton NJ, and will participate and contribute in the area of core and edge physics on a range of devices: NSTX-U, LTX-beta, ST40, and possibly MAST-U. Travel to support collaborative experimental research on offsite facilities may be required.

The Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Proposing and conducting experiments, organizing analysis, and disseminating results in the form of talks, posters, and refereed journal articles related to core and edge physics.
  • Participate in the operation of the charge exchange recombination spectroscopy diagnostics and edge rotation diagnostics.
  • Analyze data from the charge-exchange diagnostic using transport codes; an example of one such transport code for the core plasma is TRANSP.

Education and Experience:

  • Applicants should have a Ph.D. in plasma physics, nuclear engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong experimental, analytical, and English communication skills are required.
  • Experience with fusion science, as well as in spectroscopy is preferred.
