Job Summary

The incumbent will work on translational science research projects within the Applied Genomics CLIA laboratory.  The AG CLIA laboratory services the I-SPY 2 breast cancer clinical trials that characterize biomarkers of response to various therapies. The biological specimens collected will be used for various assays, including: immunohistochemical markers, genomic profiling, gene expression, proteomic arrays, serum proteomics, and various protein tests. These clinical trials provide the opportunity for the molecular characterization of locally advance breast cancers and the measurement of tumor response to therapy with MRI.

The incumbent will be part of a team responsible for receiving and storing samples acquired as part of the I-SPY clinical trails. A primary goal of the team is to process samples for send out to companies for testing as part of the trial enrollment process. This function is time sensitive with defined turn around times for samples. A secondary goal of the team is assisting in the research and development of biomarkers in breast cancer samples. As part of this effort, the incumbent will be responsible for organizing the storage of the various types of samples, preparing and distributing samples as well as maintaining the databases that electronically track the samples and collect specimen characteristics. Where required, tasks must be performed according to established operating procedures and deviations reported according to CAP/CLIA regulations.

Department Description

Clinical Laboratories at UCSF Medical Center perform diagnostic or lab tests for patients in our hospitals and clinics as well as for our researchers. These tests are performed in the areas of chemistry, hematology or blood, immunology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, toxicology and transfusion medicine. Laboratories are located at our China Basin, Mount Zion and Parnassus campuses. These labs perform more than 4.2 million tests a year.


Required Qualifications

SRA 1:

  • BS/BA in science or health related discipline.
  • Demonstrated excellent written, verbal, and telephone communication skills
  • Excellent PC computer skills, including MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook).
  • Organizational skills: the incumbent will be required to store and track all samples in a database and report metric of samples received. Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Team work: The incumbent will work with the team to accomplish various tasks based on the available staffing, length of the tasks, availability of different facilities (hood, cryostat, etc.), as well as the perishability of the samples. The incumbent will work with patient samples that require processing and shipment to outside labs for testing to determine eligibility. The incumbent will be required to meet required turn around times (TATs).
  • Communication: The incumbent must be able to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing) to carry out instructions and report problems to the laboratory management and collaborators.
  • The incumbent must be able to adhere to SOPs. Attention to detail is essential. Deviations from SOPs must be recorded and tracked.
  • Ability to perform multiple repetitive tasks with high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision and work well with others.
  • Ability to adhere to University standard operating procedures and state and federal regulations regarding private patient medical information (HIPPA)
SRA 2:
  • One or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with use of databases or laboratory information systems
  • Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining
  • Experience sectioning solid tissue samples (frozen and FFPE).
  • Experience with management of research records, including complex spreadsheets and online databases.
  • Experience and proficiency in processing blood samples
