Position Summary:
 
UCI MIND is an Organized Research Unit focusing on basic and clinical research in the fields of brain aging and cognitive disorders. Our mission is to discover means to improve the lives of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. UCI MIND is committed to community education with the goals of keeping the community informed of our progress, sharing learnings that can help community members reduce their risk for dementia.
 
Under general supervision in the Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND), the employee will assist in the maintenance of the human brain tissue and biofluids repository and facilitate dissemination of tissues and data for research projects. This position includes assisting in the coordination of the neuropathology core for the Alzheimer disease research center. The duties will include overseeing the intake of tissues (brain and blood), processing tissues for inventory, maintaining inventories and disseminating tissues for research projects. The employee will be responsible for assisting the supervisor with searching the database to identify cases, neuropathology and clinical data for research projects within and outside of UCI. The employee will also provide digital neuropathology slide scanning and help develop quantification protocols. The employee will assist in organizing clinic-pathology conferences. Additional duties include correspondence with researchers, the neuropathology team, agenda development and attendance at meetings, ordering of repository supplies, and assistance in the general operation and maintenance of the laboratory.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $25.64 - $25.64 (Hourly Rate). The Full Salary Range for the salary grade this position is assigned to is $25.64 - $30.59 (Hourly Rate).

Required:
 
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience, biology, molecular biology, or another related field. 
  • Highly motivated and service-oriented with strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to communicate clearly and tactfully with a broad variety of people both verbally and in writing. 
  • Proven ability to function effectively as a team member and follow detailed laboratory directions. 
  • Skill to operate Macintosh and PC platform, and skill to use Excel and Filemaker Pro software. Experience with RedCAP is an asset. 
  • Skill in maintaining a well-organized and professional workplace and ability to arrange for equipment repairs when necessary. 
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in different stages of development at the same time.

 


Preferred:
 
  • Knowledge of the basic anatomy of the central nervous system.
  • Skill and working knowledge of sectioning tissue with a vibratome and cryostat. 
  • Familiarity of immunohistochemical and basic histological techniques.
