Job Summary

The overall goal of the research project is twofold: 1. To develop therapeutics for the treatment of birth asphyxia utilizing large animal models; and, 2. To explore the effects of in vitro fertilization methodologies on placental vascular development. The project will assess potential therapeutic agents for safety, toxicity and efficacy with respect to neuroprotection in the setting of birth asphyxia. Additionally, murine IVF models will be utilized to assess effects on placentation. Under supervision, the individual hired will be responsible for conducting experiments designed to investigate the effects of therapies on brain pathology using histological methods. Additionally, the individual will be responsible for conducting weekly IVF experiments, and harvesting and assessing downstream placental development. The position therefore requires expertise in critical laboratory techniques.


Department Description

The Department of Pediatrics is one of the largest and most complex departments in the School of Medicine (SOM). The department is comprised of 18 divisions, with clinical income from inpatient and outpatient activities total over $65 million dollars in charges and annual extramural funding (contracts and grants) exceeding $35 million. The Department's mission includes research (both basic and clinical), education, patient care and public service.


Required Qualifications

  • SRA I:BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • SRA II:BA/BS in a related science and one or more years of recent, directly related work experience, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with histology and immunohistochemistry techniques.
  • Experience with neuroscience techniques.
  • Experience with cell culture, embryology, embryonic development and developmental methodologies.
  • Experience with organic chemistry research methodologies.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with global health projects.
  • Expertise with bioinformatics methodologies.
  • Experience with epigenetics-based research methodologies.
  • Availability for > 1 year to maintain project continuity.
