This is a one (1) year 100% limited position. There is a possibility of extension or conversion to career status depending on the needs of the department and funding availability.
The Staff Research Associate will participate in selected research projects. Under general supervision of the Principal Investigator, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows, incumbent will assist in performing experiments related to the tasks listed below. Incumbent will train lab members on established lab protocols as needed, organize and maintain the lab working areas and equipment, and serve as lab radiation and bio safety coordinator. Incumbent will also contribute to lab management by ordering lab supplies, maintaining purchasing records and re-stocking. May require after-hours FACS sorting or other experiments as needed.
Theoretical and practical knowledge of, and college level course work in, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques acquired through a combination of extensive study and experience.
Demonstrated skill, knowledge and experience in working with mice, small animal surgery and comfortable with the use of mice as experimental animals.
Skill on manipulation of BSL-2 viruses.
Experience with flow cytometry (including cell staining and data analysis).
Practical knowledge and experience in standard molecular biology procedures including but not limited to sterile technique, PCR, mouse genotyping.
Able and willing to work on feet all day and safely lift mouse cages.
Experience using Apple, PC computers and associated word processing and spreadsheet software with a willingness and ability to update and increase skills and knowledge as needed.
Excellent organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records, organize a varied workload and follow written and oral protocols.
Skill and demonstrated ability to operate standard laboratory equipment, including flow cytometer, centrifuges, balances, pH meters.
Interpersonal communication skills needed to interact well with others to facilitate communication about lab requirements.
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of matters related to work.
Prior experience and knowledge of proper handling, storage and disposal of chemicals, biochemicals, hazardous chemicals and biohazardous materials including radioactive materials.
Experience in sterile technique as applied to the propagation of prokaryotic and mammalian cells.
Basic mathematical skills; knowledge of accounting and billing practices, etc. Knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Ability to proactively and appropriate facilitate the maintenance of all lab and equipment, maintain steady levels of lab supplies and purchasing records.
Demonstrated ability to hire and direct the work of undergraduate student lab employees. Skill to train others in varous lab techniques and procedures (safety precautions, preparation of media, dishwashing, equipment usage, laboratory maintenance, etc.).
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
