Departmental Overview

The Lareau lab in the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at UC Berkeley has an opening for a Staff Research Associate I to participate in our research studying the control of gene expression. Our research uses bioinformatics and molecular biology to understand how evolution has shaped post-transcriptional regulation of RNA. We make extensive use of genome-scale approaches and deep sequencing.
We are looking for a Staff Research Associate to play a central supporting role in the research program of the laboratory. The SRA will lead in the design, implementation and analysis of genome editing experiments as well as next-generation sequencing (NGS) and other molecular biology experiments. The selected candidate should have good communication skills and the ability to work independently and design and analyze their own experiments.

The Staff Research Associate performs a variety of techniques in the field of molecular biology, including genome editing with CRISPR/Cas9, mammalian cell culture including stem cell culture, preparation of NGS libraries, analytical techniques such as quantitative real time PCR (qPCR), molecular cloning of expression constructs, and mammalian cell culture.

Required Qualifications

• B.S. or B.A. degree in the biological sciences or a related field with demonstrated success in general molecular biological techniques, or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum of one year of experience or training in the area of general molecular biology methods, such as ligation, gene cloning, gel electrophoresis of nucleic acids, PCR, and western blotting.
• Experience with mammalian cell culture and genome editing.
• Demonstrated experience performing as a part of a team
• Demonstrated ability to pay strict attention to details, keeping industry-standard records and have good communication skills.
• Ability to adhere to all campus and EH&S safety policies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in the preparation of short read DNA libraries, real time PCR (qPCR), RNA molecular biology techniques, and stem cell culture
