Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is recruiting a Staff Research Associate 2 for the Microbiology and Immunology Department. *** This position does not provide layoff rights and is contingent upon funding. *** This position will support the day-to-day management of the lab and perform experiments in the areas of fungal pathogenesis and biofilms, antifungal drug discovery, and drug repurposing. Other duties include but are not limited to; growing fungi in BSL-2 and BSL-2+ culture room; growing E. coli for cloning in BSL-1; conduct phenotypic assays for biofilm metabolic activity and antifungal susceptibilities and perform microscopic analyses.

This position is responsible for data analysis and presents data to supervisor and in lab meetings; assists in preparation of presentations, manuscripts, and grant applications; maintains and supports laboratory equipment, orders and maintains supplies/reagents, responds to emergency equipment alarms; trains and supervises students and junior staff on experimental procedures and lab operations; updates and coordinates with the principal investigator the standard operation procedures (SOPs) for all experiments and related processes; and other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in the required area of specialization and one year of professional research experience either in the field or in a laboratory; OR

  • One (1) year of experience as a Staff Research Associate I in Nevada State service, OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

Pursuant to NRS 284.4066, this position has been identified as affecting public safety. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment screening for controlled substances.

This position requires laboratory work experience in microbiology, organic chemistry, or related science.

Preferred Qualification 

Candidates with course work in microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, and/or analytic chemistry are encouraged to apply. 

Schedule or Travel Requirements

The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm; this is subject to change based on organizational needs.

Compensation Grade

Grade 31 – (Entry, Step 01 $23.49/hr. – Step 03 $25.57/hr.)

In classified service, salary is in Grade and Step. The Step is determined based on the Nevada Administrative Code. Salary placement above a Step 01 at initial appointment is determined based on the recruitment, the candidate’s qualifications, internal equity and budgets. A request to accelerate salary must be approved by Human Resources and abide by the Nevada Administrative Code.
