Under close technical supervision the incumbent will assist the Principal Investigator in research on the development and evolution of morphology of the musculoskeletal system primarily using rodents as the research models. Incumbent will assist in research by performing a wide variety of standard molecular biology techniques (PCR, gel electrophoresis, DNA transformation), tissue histology (fixation, sample preparation, and sectioning), cell and tissue culture, and animal husbandry.
They will also assist the PI by performing the following duties: order and maintain lab equipment and supplies, maintain cleanliness and safety of lab, prepare buffers and solutions, and perform other general lab duties. Perform other duties as assigned.
Theoretical and practical knowledge of molecular, cell, and developmental biology gained through a Bachelor’s degree in Biology or a related field and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience performing standard and repetitive molecular biology techniques such as RNA and DNA preparation, molecular cloning, gel electrophoresis, PCR, etc.
Experience with histology and immunostaining procedures
Experience with sterile techniques, calculating molarity and dilutions, and preparing buffers, solutions and growth media.
Experience operating laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, ultracentrifuges, balances, pH meters.
Demonstrated knowledge of principles of basic light microscopy; experience with compound microscopes.
Knowledge of specialized scientific terminology.
Ability to learn new experimental methods as required. Ability to work independently or collaboratively on a research project.
Ability to record scientific data in a well-organized laboratory notebook. Good organizational skills including ability to keep clear and accurate records.
Knowledge of purchasing and reimbursement procedures. Skills in maintaining steady levels of lab supplies, maintaining purchasing records, and training others in purchasing procedures.
Effective (English) oral and written communication skills. Also good interpersonal communication skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility with students, staff, faculty, and visitors of various cultures and backgrounds.
Experience using MAC or PC, and associated software including FilemakerPro, MS Word, and Excel
Knowledge/understanding and at least some experience with Safety Data Sheets, hazard communication and Injury and Illness Prevention Program. Familiarity with a Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing safety precautions including appropriate clothing and shoes, safe handling of chemicals, use of protective items. Willingness and ability to keep safety training current and consistent with research involvement.
Ability to confidently direct others in safety regulations to maintain a safe and efficiently functioning lab environment
Knowledge of humane methods of caring for lab animals, such as mice or rats. Sensitivity to the needs of caged laboratory animals in compliance with AAALAC standards.
Willingness and demonstrated ability to embrace and consistently uphold the principles of community for a collaborative work environment.
Pay Transparency Act
Annual Full Pay Range: $53,766 - $64,143 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hourly Equivalent: $25.75 - $30.72
Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
