Job Summary

This position is for a Staff Research Assistant to work on federally funded research studies of a mindfulness and other behavioral interventions for opioid-treated chronic pain patients. The research assistant will recruit, screen, and assess patients with multiple comorbidities (including chronic pain, mental health disorders, and substance use disorders), and provide administrative support via telephone to schedule research assessments and maintain follow-up contact with research participants.

Recruits participants via phone calls and in-person recruiting; screens potential participants for eligibility criteria; schedules research assessments by phone; follow-up contacts with research participants to help retain them in the studies and prevent study attrition; maintain study databases. Conducts research assessments, which include structured assessments of psychological symptoms, cognitive tasks, and psychophysiological measures, and performs data cleaning and entry.

The incumbent works under general supervision in the performance of most tasks and may determine the prioritization of routine work assignments and assist in establishing standardized questions for interviews.

This position is considered Category IIA: Not required on campus and has the ability to telework remotely for the duration of the University of Utah’s response to COVID-19. An employee hired into this role will be responsible for providing space, telephone, printing, networking and/or internet capabilities at the telecommute location and agree to the terms of the University of Utah campus and Health Academics COVID-19 Telecommuting Agreement.

Responsibilities

Compiles data from a variety of sources including interviews, literature sources, and medical and genealogical records; enters information into the department’s computer system. Assists PI’s, Research Associate’s, Post-doctoral fellows, etc. in the preparation of manuscripts and presentation materials by creating slides, charts, graphs and handouts. Maintains up-to-date files and records of research data. Searches sources such as reference works, documents, statistical records, etc. and evaluates applicability of collected data to research subject. May draft correspondence to answer inquiries and respond to requests from outside agencies about specific projects. May edit research papers, project reports, and publication materials; may make arrangements for the printing and graphic art requirements for printed materials. May maintain an internal library on project information resources and data collected. Performs quality control through path audits in order to resolve discrepancies and overlaps with data. Schedules appointments, visits, and meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

One year research experience or equivalency; demonstrated organizational and communication skills; and a commitment to provide excellent customer service required. An understanding of research protocols and procedures preferred.
