Position Summary
Staff Nurse II is accountable for the delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model as the framework. The Staff Nurse II provides direct patient care and takes initiative to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership, Evidence Based Practice, Relationship Based Care and standards of nursing excellence into clinical practice. Through therapeutic relationships with patients, families, self and colleagues, the Staff Nurse II functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and fulfills unit and organizational goals. Staff Nurse II facilitates educational development of staff, leads unit-based quality improvement initiatives and acts as a professional and clinical role model and educational resource for staff. Staff Nurse II is actively engaged in Shared Leadership through membership on a governing council.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and updates the patient’s plan of care based on on-going assessment of the patient and
  • input from the patient’s family.
  • Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient
  • care.
  • Verifies and implements orders from physician, physician assistant and/or advance practice nurse by performing
  • interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Engages and obtains information from patient and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient’s changing needs.
  • Engages support personnel by delegating appropriate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act and provides
  • support and feedback.
  • Advocates for patients, families, and their significant others, the community, and the nursing profession.
  • Assumes role of Charge Nurse when assigned, utilizing appropriate resources and tools.
  • Integrates theoretical knowledge, evidence-based research, current standards of practice and clinical experience
  • to provide “quality” patient care as measured by established nursing quality standards and other
  • governing/accrediting health care bodies.
  • Takes responsibility for continued professional growth/development by identification of learning needs and
  • initiates strategies to meet such needs.
  • Identifies recurring clinical practice and/or related unit problems and participates in problem solving and
  • resolution.
  • Plans, presents, and evaluates learning/educational experiences for staff and students.
  • Serves as preceptor and/or resource to other nursing, support staff and students.
  • In collaboration with Director/CNCII leads unit-based quality initiatives and provides feedback and education to
  • staff.

  • Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois with the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, Division of Professional Regulation.
  • One year of RN experience.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and other required unit specific certifications.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, family, and health care providers.
  • Intermediate computer skills with the ability to become proficient in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) with on-the-job training.
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills and work history required.
    • Bachelor’s degree in nursing required; master’s degree in nursing preferred

    • 1-2 years of experience in Pediatric Emergency Nursing
    • Experience supporting unit-based education in pediatric education
    • ACLS and PALS or ENPC Required. TNS, TNCC, or CEN desired
    • CPEN is required withing 1 year of hire
    • Expertise and clinical experience in patient care for their specialty area, specialized equipment, and to facilitate orientation, preceptor and role model functions
    • Clinical care required of this role will include adult and pediatric patient population
