Staff Instructor, Upward Bound, Math

Location:  New Orleans, LA
Summary
The Staff Instructor, under the supervision of the Director and Assistant Director, will facilitate and teach core academic courses in Mathematics at Upward Bound. Courses are designed to provide participants with the rigorous academic skills, study habits and discipline necessary for success at the post-secondary level. The curriculum and the development of the course will be based on national standards and metrics of college readiness with an emphasis in project-based learning. Additionally, instructors will assist the program staff with developing participants' college readiness skills, completion of college applications, financial literacy, 21st century soft skills, ACT review, and other necessary components. These components are designed to ease the transition from secondary to post-secondary education.

 


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with interactive teaching methods/techniques that will engage students at all levels and create a learning environment of critical-thinking.

  • Subject matter expertise in content area.

  • Strong relationship skills, well organized and detailed oriented.

  • Self-directed and results oriented with the ability to thrive in an evolving workplace.

  • Belief in the ability of all youth, regardless of background, to succeed.

  • Understanding of the key components of college-readiness and experience in implementing structure and programming around them.

  • Knowledge of the barriers facing first generation college students.

  • Ability to relate to young people, see their potential for growth, and support them to succeed.

  • Familiarity with analyzing student data reports.

  • Ability to learn methodology and implement strategy.

  • Familiarity with New Orleans educational system in general and Cowen Institute's work.

  • Ability to commit to the 6-week summer program in addition to the regular UB Saturday Academy (8 AM - 1 PM) schedule during the academic year.

 


Required Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in an education related field and 2 years of teaching experience in the core academic area of Mathematics.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in specific content area.

  • Experience working with at-risk youth.

 


Compensation Information
This position is classified as "exempt, salaried" and is assigned to pay grade null.
