Staff Engineer (Energy Engineer)(FMD)

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

Provides engineering support in the development and implementation of energy reduction programs on the University’s campus, supporting Duke’s commitment to climate neutrality. Serves as principal technical advisor regarding reducing energy use in University Buildings. Individual will be involved in campus building energy reduction by implementation of Facility Improvement Measures (FIMs) in existing buildings, developing latest energy guidelines for new construction, and investigating renewable energy projects on campus. Position will report to the Campus Building Energy Manager, and will be essential in Duke’s Climate Action Plan success and sustainability goals.

Work Performed

· Facility Improvement Measure Development

o Identifies building mechanical and electrical problems impacting energy consumption utilizing all available systems and tool; analyzes heating, cooling, ventilation, controls and lighting systems to determine optimum operating conditions.

o Performs energy calculations using spreadsheets and energy modeling software to determine energy savings associated with each FIM.

o Generates Scope of Work for subcontractors and develops cost estimates associated with the FIMs.

o Develops and recommends equipment operational strategies to maximize efficiency.

o Analyzes blue prints and performs site surveys to determine facility operational characteristics.

o Applies building energy simulation programs to develop energy, cooling, and heating load-building models using modeling software.

o Investigates and develops funding mechanisms for FIMs.

o Works closely with campus building coordinators and occupants to develop and implement projects.

· Energy Usage & Cost Analysis

o Establishes building benchmarks as a baseline for energy use, improvement comparisons, and excessive use investigations.

o Provides on-going demand and consumption analysis on building energy utilities including electricity, gas, water, sewer and renewable sources.

o Develops internal workflows and processes to ensure the regular tracking of appropriate performance measures to support continuous improvement in energy management and conservation

o Perform post-project analysis to validate FIMs.

· Planning

o Contributes to periodic revisions of Duke’s Climate Action Plan.

o As needed, provides design review and consultant engagement for building construction and renovation projects; makes recommendations regarding energy conservation and appropriate technology to ensure efficient energy and environmental compliance.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field. Certified Energy Manager (CEM) preferred.

Experience:

Requires a minimum of 3 years related experience developing, implementing and monitoring energy management programs. Experience in building design, green construction and sustainable design desired. Experience performing energy analysis and calculations. Strong and in-depth knowledge of commercial HVAC, electrical, and BAS systems.  OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Skills:

Strong understanding of energy conservation principles and techniques. Strong understanding of the construction and/or building operations industry, and green building best practices. Ability to analyze trend data and develop reports with recommendations, discrepancies, and description of system performance. Ability to read and understand blueprints and schematics. Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrate an attention to detail.

Ability to multi-task and juggle multiple priorities. Strong organizational skills.
