The Columbia University, Robert N Butler Columbia Aging Center is seeking a full-time Staff Associate II (Biostatistician) to aid in statistical analysis and day-to-day data management associated with multiple concurrent research projects of the Aiello Research Group.

 

The Aiello Research Group seeks to identify the interaction and influence of social and biological factors on long-term health outcomes, including the effect of socioeconomic position, stress, and infection on chronic disease and mental health outcomes. We also investigate preventive measures for reducing infectious disease transmission in the community setting with a focus on non-pharmaceutical interventions. We aim to reduce social disparities in infection, chronic disease, and mental health by conducting integrative research across areas such as epidemiology, gerontology, sociology, infectious diseases, immunology, and laboratory research.

 

Responsibilities

 

·       40% - The individual will work with the principal investigator (PI), project director, associate research scientist, student researchers, and other research collaborators to develop and execute clear, well-documented statistical analysis programs and research methods. Identify appropriate variables and statistical programs for proposed analysis across projects; Produce tables and figures based on study results; Perform literature reviews and run preliminary analysis to aid in the development of grant proposals.

·       40% - The individual will perform day-to-day data management across projects. Organize existing datasets, including biospecimen inventory, for large studies and maintain documentation of processes; Develop and maintain codebooks across projects; Perform quality control processes for incoming data; Perform data auditing and cleaning across multiple projects; Document datasets content across locations; Appropriately discard unnecessary data; Provide regular updates to research team on status of projects in data collection and data analysis phases; Take initiative to acquire new statistical and/or programming skills as needed.

·       20% - The individual will maintain university processes for collecting, monitoring, storing, and transferring study data. Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to differentiate between data appropriate for various University storage locations; Develop SOPs for receiving, processing, storing, and sharing data based on the IRB-determined security level; Identify and document content of sensitive datasets across storage locations; Create non-sensitive datasets for collaborators; Process data requests, including securely sharing datasets with University-approved collaborators after necessary documentation is in-place (IRBs, DUAs, MTAs, etc.); Create and integrate new variables with existing datasets, as needed, following project completion.

Minimum Qualifications

 

·       Bachelor's degree in a research specific field, such as public health, biostatistics, biomedical sciences, mathematics, or a related field and 4 years of experience recommended.

·       Candidates must have experience with SAS, STATA, and/or R programming software.

·       Experience in measurement and analysis of biological and social variables in the study of health and/or aging.

·       Strong interpersonal, collaboration, and verbal/written communication skills.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

·       Master's degree in public health, biostatistics, epidemiology, or related field is preferred.

·       Familiarity with one or more of the following datasets: Biomarkers, DNA methylation data, RNA sequencing data, and/or metabolomics data.

·       Experience or willingness to gain expertise in various programming languages.

·       Demonstrated interest in the research topics investigated by the Aiello Research Group.

 

Other Requirements

 

·       Ability to report in-person to New York City office Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm EST is required.

 

Appointments are on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1st, contingent upon performance and funding. This position is anticipated for a duration of 2 years.

 

Projected start date will be July 1, 2024, position will be open until filled.
