Job Description:

The Server Administrator has a pivotal role within the Technology Department, working in tandem with the Senior Server Administrator to ensure the University's server infrastructure spanning both Linux and Windows operating systems is optimized for performance and security. This position is critical for maintaining a robust, secure, and efficient mixed-OS server environment to support the University's academic and administrative objectives.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Server Environment Management: Ensures the seamless operation of Fitchburg State University's mixed-OS server landscape, implementing best practices for system performance and security.
  • System Planning and Deployment: Leads the evaluation, selection, and procurement of server hardware and management software, such as health monitoring, configuration management, and security tools. Plans and executes installing, testing, and deploying new systems and upgrades to enhance infrastructure capabilities.
  • Security Vigilance: Actively manages system security through regular updates and patches, identifies and mitigates vulnerabilities, and maintains high data protection standards.
  • System Monitoring: Establishes and oversees monitoring protocols to ensure system health, performance tuning, and capacity planning, ensuring the infrastructure meets evolving business requirements.
  • Problem Resolution: Provides expert troubleshooting and problem-solving, leveraging a wide range of resources and liaising with vendors and external consultants as necessary.
  • Directs optimizing and managing the University's VMware vSphere infrastructure, ensuring it meets and surpasses operational and security standards. Responsibilities include enhancing performance, ensuring scalability, and upholding strict security protocols to maintain a secure, efficient virtualization environment.
  • Oversees the University's Tools4Ever identity automation system, fine-tuning its operations to align with and exceed the University's operational efficiencies and security frameworks. This role ensures seamless identity management and access control, bolstering system security and enhancing user experience.
  • Application and Service Management: Administers critical third-party applications and services hosted on university servers, ensuring reliability and performance.
  • Documentation and Compliance: Maintains comprehensive documentation of system configurations, changes, and procedures in the Technology Department document library, ensuring knowledge sharing and compliance.
  • Collaboration and Support: Works closely with university departments to align server infrastructure with academic and business needs. Participates in and contributes to Technology Department projects, ensuring timely completion of tasks.
  • Continuous Improvement: Recommends and implements improvements to the server infrastructure, enhancing efficiency, security, and integration with other Technology Department systems.
  • Help Desk Support: Provides prompt and professional resolution of issues reported to the Help Desk, ensuring user satisfaction and system reliability.
  • Additional Responsibilities: Undertakes other duties as directed by the Technology Department management team, demonstrating flexibility and a commitment to the university's Technology Department goals.

  • Requirements:

  • Associate's Degree or higher required.  B.A. or B.S. degree preferred.
  • 1-3 years minimum experience with Linux system administration and command line.
  • 1-3 years minimum experience with Microsoft Windows server administration.
  • Demonstrated experience with virtualization technologies, particularly VMware.
  • Demonstrated experience managing file, web, and other application servers.
  • Experience with Microsoft Active Directory is also preferred.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines and project deliverables.
  • Open to flexible work arrangements, including the possibility of a partial remote work schedule, subject to departmental requirements.
  • Ability to perform above duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to satisfactorily pass a check conducted by the Criminal History Systems Board (CORI check), a SORI check and a background check satisfactory to the university.

  • Additional Information:

    This is a full-time, benefited, exempt, professional APA position. The annual salary range for this position is $79K - $84K.
