About this Opportunity
Ball State University is seeking a Staff Accountant to join our team in the Controller’s Office. The university offers excellent benefits and generous time off.
The position offers a great opportunity to learn and be challenged by the University’s financial reporting and finance systems. Working with a team and reporting directly to the Associate Controller, you will be exposed to a variety of accounting and operational processes across campus.

Position Function
Provide accurate and timely financial information for a diversity of users; maintain the integrity of the university’s financial records; perform bank and general ledger reconciliations; update the university chart of accounts; provide training and assist in developing training materials to use in formal and non-formal training environments; and provide outreach to departments to improve processes and implement best practices. Assist with tax reporting, and with retiree health and life calculations and reporting. Work with international students to help obtain ITIN for tax filing.
Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related financial field from an accredited institution by date of appointment.

Superior proficiency with Excel; excellent problem solving skills; ability to communicate difficult concepts; ability to work independently as well as contribute as a member of a team; must be analytical, highly organized, and detail oriented; ability to learn new software applications.
Authorization to work in the US Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

Preferred Experience
Financial accounting, fund accounting, or audit experience; experience in university or fund accounting.

Duties & Responsibilities


Ranking 1
Job Duty
Provide support in the preparation of the university annual financial report; analyze accounting activity; generate reports from the Banner system; prepare supporting schedules; assist in financial report reviews.

Job Duty
Prepare bank and general ledger reconciliations; research reconciling items; determine effect on accounts; initiate corrections/transactions; communicate with various university departments and external entities to gain information and resolve discrepancies.

Review requests for new and updated foapal (chart) elements and Accounts Receivable detail codes; enter fund, organization, account, program and activity codes into the Banner finance system; maintain awareness of impact to chart of accounts and financial reporting; maintain master chart of accounts spreadsheet.

Prepare annual financial and federal reports for WIPB-TV and WBST-FM; ensure financial data is presented in accordance with the most current generally accepted accounting principles and meets Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) presentation requirements; review reporting completed by other Accountant; work with station personnel and auditors.

Prepare bi-annual financial reporting for Burris and Indiana Academy as required by the Indiana Department of Education; remain current on reporting requirements; update accounting crosswalk as necessary; review reporting completed by other Accountant; work with school personnel and IDOE.

Complete various annual financial surveys required by the university; review survey request detail; interpret year-end financial information and create supporting documents; create and update survey procedures; review surveys completed by other Accountant.

Provide support in the training of university personnel in the proper preparation and recording of accounting transactions to ensure accurate financial and tax reporting, and use of the Banner systems; assist university personnel in the review of financial data in Banner systems; assist in preparation and development of training materials and website FAQs.

Perform tax duties, including reviewing, reconciling, and preparing documents for Indiana Sales, Food & Beverage, and County Innkeepers taxes monthly filing; work with the Tax Manager in compiling data for the annual IRS 990-T as well as on payroll tax compliance issues; review tax withholdings monthly, quarterly, and annually for compliance with state and federal tax deposit filing; assist international students to obtain an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN); and stay abreast of changes to payroll and tax policies and procedures.
