Position Summary
The Stacks Maintenance Assistant plays a vital role in maintaining access to and usability of the Duke University Libraries’ collections. They are responsible for maintaining general order in the Perkins and Bostock Libraries stacks, processing incoming and outgoing materials, assisting patrons and alerting management and facilities personnel to existing and potential problems in their work areas.

Responsibilities

  • Shelves library materials and shifts blocks of items on shelves as necessary.  Helps to maintain appropriate shelf spacing within the Perkins and Bostock Library. 
  • Performs daily inspection of all library floors to retrieve and process library materials used in- house by library patrons.  Reports on building maintenance needs discovered during rounds.
  • Resolves mechanical problems involving compact shelves; alerts supervisor to problems and contacts vendor when repair calls are required if the Stacks Maintenance Supervisor is unavailable.
  • Checks in returned items, processes new arrivals, and performs other operations in the presorting area to prepare materials for circulation or reshelving.  Includes tasks such as routing books to other libraries and locations, sorting returned items to place in order for shelving; organizing books in call number order on shelving trucks.
  • Updates and replaces stack signs and other guides as needed.
  • Reports the condition of stacks and library floors to the Stacks Maintenance Supervisor; reports other issues of concern to the building manager or appropriate library staff. Reports emergency to Facilities or the Duke Police and alerts other managers as needed.
  • Takes part in collection shifts and material transfers as directed by stacks supervisor.
  • Replaces shelves and sections of shelving units as needed.
  • Assists the Stacks Maintenance Supervisor with the training and monitoring of student workers in stacks maintenance procedures and projects; provides support for the Stacks Maintenance Supervisor and serves as a contact person in the Stack Maintenance Supervisor’s absence.
  • Evaluates books for repair needs; routes items with mistaken call number markings or cataloging errors for resolution.
  • Provides public service assistance to patrons in the stacks and in the presorting area. Fills in when necessary for early morning shifts at circulation desk. Serves on the severe weather essential skeleton staff.
  • Assists Reference area staff with processing, sorting and shelving Reference Collection materials. Maintains Reference area stacks, shifts materials as needed.
  • Performs assigned duties within other ADS sections as needed for up to 2 hours per day. This may include applying plastic book covers and labels, retrieving requests, performing stacks searches, shipping and processing materials.
  • Works in a manner that aligns with the Duke Libraries User Service Philosophy by providing helpful, reliable, and consistent service to internal and external customers as a result of fostering comfortable, empathetic interactions and accepting the responsibility to assist them and each other in harassing or discriminatory situations irrespective of race, age, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, or any other marginalized identity feature.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Assists with training and supervision of Stacks Unit student assistants

Qualifications

Preferred: Prior experience working in a large academic library. Training or experience in customer service; organizational skills and experience with on-line databases or library catalogs. Minimum Qualifications
Education

Required: Two years post-secondary education or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.


Experience

Required: Three months relevant experience; strong interpersonal, oral OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE and written communication skills; able to work independently and as a member of a team; basic proficiency using computer based technology; ability to effectively organize and prioritize daily work; demonstrated commitment to providing outstanding customer services. Preferred: Prior experience working in an academic research library
