Summary

Peer mentors are undergraduate students majoring in the College of Arts & Sciences or the School of Business who have completed two years at Barry and will be a junior or senior in Fall 2024. Peer mentors provide support for students in our program to develop their future identities, being role models and examples of success in their respective majors at Barry, and sharing their background and path to achievement of their own academic goals. Peer mentors are active with the students all day Monday-Thursday attending classes in developmental math,  English or computer science in the mornings and extra-curricular and community-building activities or help with homework in the  afternoons. They may also organize group activities on Fridays or weekends. They assist the Faculty mentors in leading community-building activities and are available to answer student questions and help with course material, as well as students’ transition from high school to college, and familiarizing students with the Barry campus and resources. Peer mentors work up to 20  hours per week during the Summer Scholars Program June 21 – August 8, and attend a 3-hour paid training on the week of June 17. This position is only being offered in the summer and will conclude on August 8, 2024.


Essential Functions

  • Give input to faculty mentors on Scholar’s progress and adjustment to college classes, and barriers they may be facing. Help plan group activities.

  • Attend and help the faculty mentor(s) in leading identity-building and campus orientation activities.

  •  Actively encourage Scholars to attend, and attend with them, bringing a positive attitude and making sure Scholars see the importance of engaging with campus resources.

  •  Attend classes with the Summer Scholars, assist scholars in keeping up with homework assignments, using Canvas sites, studying, and learning course material.


Qualifications/Requirements

  •  Must have good time management skills, be punctual and accountable. Must be committed to the success of others and provide a good example of engagement and academic achievement.

  • Must be registered for Summer or Fall semester by June 21.

  • Open to majors in College of Arts & Sciences or the School of Business who will be Juniors or Seniors in Fall 2024.
