Department Description

The UC Davis Genome Center in the College of Biological Sciences, coordinates interdisciplinary research in the areas of genomics, metabolomics, proteomics and bioinformatics, and is involved in the training of undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. Annual funding is approximately $21 million from multiple sources. Approximately $6-7 million of annual expenditures come through the Center’s six service Cores, which provide genomic technologies to approximately 700 customers both on and off-campus.

This position works in Genome Center Director Blake Meyers’ lab, serving as an SRA1 in a research laboratory studying plant genetics, genomics, and RNA biology, using bioinformatics methods as a key aspect of the studies.



Job Summary

Under supervision of Professor Blake Meyers, perform data processing procedures and activities troubleshooting various web and database applications related to RNAs.

Perform tasks and procedures related to processing and storage of raw next-generation sequencing data, with limited supervision according to Standard Operating Procedures established for the Meyers Lab, including but not limited to adapter trimming and preprocessing of RNA-seq and small RNA data, quality control of such data, and deposition and extraction of data into and from databases. Troubleshooting of already-deployed web applications, including small RNA tools such as mapping and target prediction software. Work closely with the Meyers lab members staff and researchers to perform these tasks.

This is a part-time position, variable between 50% and 75%. Remote work is allowed.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

·       B.A. or B.S. in Data Science, Computer Science, or related fields.

·       Experience in data processing and computer science, plus a working knowledge of computational approaches and applications in genomics.

·       Experience with PHP, Apache, MySQL.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

·       Knowledge to adapt, design and troubleshoot data processing protocols.

·       Knowledge of general laboratory operations, e.g., maintaining code and equipment, etc., and ability to supervise assistants in these duties.

·       Skills to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze genomic data and formulate conclusions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:   

·       Experience in processing data, storing, and extracting data from databases.

·       Experience with the analysis of large data sets.
