The Diabetes Research Institute has an exciting opportunity for Senior Veterinary Technician position. The incumbent assists managing staff in attending to the health of assigned animals. Specifically, the Senior Veterinary Technician ensures the safety and well-being of the animals while complying with applicable rules and regulations.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                           

  • Assists in major surgeries, performs minor procedures, and monitors final disposition of animals.

  • Administers routine medical treatment to animals.

  • Oversees incoming and outgoing animal shipments and assesses the health of and necessary treatments for the animals.

  • Supports physical examination schedules and organizes regular health screening for long-term animals.

  • Ensures that medical records are complete. Supervises inventory and assists with the purchase of medical equipment.

  • Provides pre- and post-operative care and anesthetic monitoring.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

DEPARTMENT ADDENDUM

Department Specific Functions

A Sr. Veterinary Technician is sought at the Pancreatic Development & Regeneration laboratory of the Diabetes Research Institute, led by Dr. Domínguez-Bendala. The selected candidate will have at least three years of experience with laboratory animal models, especially rodents, and will be involved routinely in tasks such as mouse breeding, colony maintenance, genotyping, procurement of samples, administration of treatments, blood glucose monitoring, glucose tolerance tests, and surgical procedures. In addition, this position requires laboratory work, including (but not limited to) medium preparation, pancreatic slicing, cell/tissue culture in sterile conditions, microscope image acquisition and analysis, immunofluorescence, PCR, ELISAs, etc. Therefore, laboratory experience is also a must. The ideal candidate would work closely under the guidance of the Laboratory Manager and should also be able to present his/her data/findings in an organized fashion to her supervisors and the group at large.  He/she should have strong communication skills and be adept/develop skills at using standard analytical software used in the lab. Given the nature of the laboratory’s research, he/she must be able and willing to work on evenings and weekends as needed.
