University Student Services (USS) is a division of Johns Hopkins University serving all nine of the University’s academic divisions. In its role, the University Student Services’ Finance Team works collaboratively across the University to support high-level strategic planning issues and initiatives related to Student Services which includes the areas of Strategic Initiatives, Capital Finance, and well as Reporting & Analysis.

The operating budget under management supports student services across all nine of the JHU schools which includes Student Affairs, Auxiliaries, Admissions and Financial Aid, Integrative Learning and Life Design, Student Health and Well-Being, Student Enrollment and Account Management/Office of the University Registrar, and the Center for Diversity and Inclusion.

There are several major and many minor capital projects that are part of the budget. The upcoming capital budget averages $90M annually, with the most significant projects being the completion of the new Johns Hopkins Student Center and the Housing and Dining Master Plan.

The Sr. Strategic and Finance Associate for University Student Services,who will act as an internal consultant whose work informs decision-making among senior leadership on a wide range of USS financial strategy and policy issues, focusing much of their time on financial modeling, capital planning, and decision support around the University’s housing, dining, athletics, student success, and other student-facing, facilities including the nearly completed Hopkins Student Center. This role works to provide analytic capacity and financial modeling on issues and initiatives of interest to university and department leadership as they relate to Student Services.

The Sr. Strategic Finance Associate partners with Real Estate, Facilities, On-Campus Living, University Dining, Student Engagement, and other stakeholders across the institution to advance and support the capital needs of the University’s student population. Among other things, their role helps to develop USS’s multi-year capital project financial plan, ensuring alignment between vision and financial resources.

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Finance and Operations, we are seeking a Sr. Strategic and Finance Associate for University Student Services who will be part of the USS Finance team. The position will manage a portfolio of strategic and financial analysis projects and work with other members of finance, USS, and University administration teams to move these projects forward independently. S/he will work collaboratively with senior staff across University Student Services, within University Administration, and the divisions, among others.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Become a trusted partner and advisor to the USS AVP Finance and Administration as well as the USS Sr. Director, Finance & Operations on topics related to financial analytics and modeling.
  • Provide decision support by delivering accurate and timely financial analyses for strategic initiatives, issues, and projects of high priority for senior leadership.
  • Create financial models, long-range forecasts, operating and capital budgets to solve complex problems and answer nuanced questions.
  • Improve and refine existing financial models to accurately forecast key financial and operational metrics against strategic goals.
  • Conduct comprehensive benchmark studies on strategic, financial and operational topics to drive improvement and enhance existing processes.
  • Assess objectively business and financial processes and establish clear project requirements, scope, and objectives.
  • Create high-quality presentation materials and memoranda to communicate context, findings, and recommendations to senior university leadership.
  • Work independently to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Identifies and mitigates risks associated with projects and project timelines; proactively manages any potential roadblocks and works with teams/stakeholders to ensure projects stay on track.
  • Establishes strong partnerships with key staff in the academic divisions and University Administration.
  • Demonstrates respect for process and knowledge and exercises diplomacy in working with sponsors, subject matter experts, stakeholders, team members, and leadership.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in relevant discipline.
  • Five years of related work experience demonstrating increasing responsibility.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced Degree in Finance, Business, Public Administration or a related field is highly preferred.
  • Financial analysis, project management, and/or consulting experience desired with 5-7 years of related work experience demonstrating increasing responsibility.

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience.
