Position Summary

Natural Heritage New Mexico (NHNM) is a program of the Museum of Southwestern Biology, in the UNM Biology Department. NHNM has one short-term opening for a Sr. Field Research Tech/Life Sciences with an emphasis in botanical surveying and mapping.
The position will involve conducting botanical and ecological surveys, collecting data for a terrestrial habitat mapping project in the Southern Rockies of New Mexico. Duties will include gathering field botanical and vegetation community information, while camping and working with a team in remote areas of northern NM.
The successfully candidate will have worked for at least one field season as a field-team lead and have a good working knowledge of the flora of New Mexico.

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

1. Knowledge, skills and ability in identifying the flora of New Mexico.
2. Experience doing natural resources and biological inventory including the field measurement and recording for vegetation data; collection, preparation, and cataloging of field samples and specimens. Experience collecting related ancillary data and use of ancillary field equipment such as gps unit, camera, range finder, clinometer, compass, etc.
3. Ability to follow an established data collection protocol.
4. Skills and experience using geographic information systems (GIS) and maps to orient in the field.
5. Experience in sampling soil, geomorphological, hydrological and other environmental variables.
