About the Department
 

Dr. Mark Applebaum is a member of the section of Hematology/ Oncology & Stem Cell Transplantation in the Department of Pediatrics. The long-term focus of his laboratory research is on understanding the biology of neuroblastoma and to translate laboratory findings into clinical use. The principle contribution of this position is providing technical and administrative support in an exciting research program designed to understand the fundamental mechanisms of the epigenetic regulation of the hypoxia response in neuroblastoma and to develop new therapeutic strategies to combat treatment resistance. The laboratory uses cell culture and mouse models to recapitulate human disease with a clear goal for clinical translation. The laboratory is looking for a bright, meticulous, motivated, and curious individual who would like to learn about translational medicine and master an array of biomedical techniques. This at-will position is partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.


Job Summary
 

Principal contribution is the application of principles and knowledge relevant to the administration and support of the research project. Under limited direction of the principle investigator, will work as a proactive participant with a team of researchers investigating the biology of neuroblastoma. Laboratory-related responsibilities would include performing complex lab and research-related duties and tasks. Will help develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making contributions to methodology. Specific laboratory skills include maintenance of human cancer cell lines, cell death and proliferation assays, flow cytometry, PCR, real-time PCR, plasmid preparations, western blots, in vitro drug testing, light-field/confocal microscopy, basic molecular biology, mass spectrometry, and basic molecular biology techniques. Animal studies may include breeding and caring for mice in treatment studies, including blood draws, injections and necropsies. Work may include ensuring compliance with institution, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directive and mandates as well as collecting and maintaining data and /or specimens. Collects, records and analyzes data, and participates in writing reports and manuscripts. Will oversee the management of equipment and supplies and will train and oversee the work of research support personnel. Responsibilities may include the following non-laboratory duties: Assisting with developing data collection tools, assisting with building databases, and providing general administrative support.
This position is eligible for a flexible work arrangement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan, including planning new procedures, adapting existing procedures to the needs of the project, and making contributions to methodology. 

  • Breeding and caring for mice in treatment studies, including blood draws, injections and necropsies. 

  • Oversee the management of equipment and supplies.  

  • Train and oversee the work of research support personnel. 

  • Collects, records and analyzes data, and participates in writing reports and manuscripts. 

  • Ensuring compliance with institution, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directive and mandates. 

  • Assisting with developing data collection tools, assisting with building databases, and providing general administrative support. 

  • Supervise, train, and direct lab personnel including new technicians and students. 

  • Guide and assist trainees (graduate students, post-doctoral scholars, medical students, and residents) in conducting research. 

  • Provide instruction to lab users on technically complex procedures, equipment, and instruments. 

  • Oversee and guide lab personnel in analysis and review of results and provide recommendations of adjustments to protocols to improve validity and accuracy. 

  • Oversight of day-to-day research activities and provide logistical support for smooth running of the lab including ordering, organization, and stocking lab materials and supplies. 

  • Ensure adherence to safe laboratory practices and proper upkeep of the laboratory environment and equipment. 

  • Develop and manage lab budgets for purchasing of supplies, materials, equipment, and services and determine that they are necessary, reasonable, and project related based on budgets. 

  • Manage, maintain, and ensure adherence to all associated rules and regulations that are outlined in human subjects (IRB), biosafety (IBC), and animal usage (IACUC) protocols and lab safety requirements are up to date. 

  • Communicate and coordinate between collaboration organizations and other research institutions for research lab activities and projects. 

  • Perform administrative duties and manage technical operations of the lab involved in scientific research activities. 

  • Perform other lab duties in KCBD 5th floor. 

  • Daily checking of the liquid nitrogen and CO2 supply, reordering stock tanks, and unhooking/hooking new tanks. 

  • Daily checking of chemical stocks for developer and ordering more as needed. 

  • Waste disposal form for developer and fixer when barrel levels are low and arrangement of repairs when needed. 

  • Provide training, supervision, troubleshooting, and maintenance repair for Department equipment. 

  • Provide safety orientation training for all summer students. 

  • Arrange yearly certifications for all Biosafety Cabinets on the floor. 

  • Overall contact for building manager, Safety Office, department administrators, etc. 

  • Submit physical plant repair requests. 

  • Locker assignments and distribution of keys. 

  • Takes responsibility for the following laboratory duties: recognizing abnormal results and varying conditions or procedures to correct problems; setting up and performing experiments. Analyze the meaning, significance, causes, and effects of the subject. 

  • Applies research principles and relevant subject matter knowledge relevant to administer a research project. With a moderate level of direction, manages lab and/or research-related duties and tasks. Helps develop, design and conduct research projects according to plan. 

  • Performs other related work as needed. 


Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

  • Advanced degree in a relevant field relevant to the research being conducted.
