Sr Project Coordinator (Computing Facilities)

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL ) Information Technology Division has an opening for a Sr Project Coordinator to join the team.

In this exciting role, you will help a wide variety of projects to be successful! Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Information Technology (IT) Division Infrastructure Services Department represents the IT Division in a variety of large Lab projects (like new buildings, site utility upgrades, and large scientific facility upgrades). The department also initiates and drives a variety of smaller projects to improve or expand data centers, telecommunications spaces, and intrabuilding cable infrastructure as well as replace major communications systems. This position is focused on ensuring that all of those projects go smoothly and provide maximum benefit to the Lab. A successful candidate should start out with in-depth IT experience and expertise in at least one of these specialties to be able to act as an IT subject matter expert: network, telephone, data center, cyber security, IT infrastructure. After starting the position the successful candidate would be expected to be able to gain at least a high level understanding of the other specialties in order to communicate LBNL IT Division standards and processes to project stakeholders and know when to bring other IT Division subject matter experts into meetings or discussions.

You will act as a primary point of contact, coordination, and documentation for major Lab projects between the IT Division and other LBNL Ops divisions, LBNL science divisions, and contractors. You will act as a primary point of coordination and documentation for IT-initiated projects. 

 

What You Will Do:

  • Represent the department and/or Division for efforts having a Lab wide impact, such as: the planning and design of new communications systems for new and modified buildings as well as other Lab wide projects requiring communications facilities.
  • Collaborate and be responsive to project managers, scientists, and engineers regarding their overall communications wiring needs and when warranted, provide economical alternatives to meet requirements and project / task schedules and budgets.
  • Conceive, plan, and implement original approaches to solve complex problems of diverse scope.
  • Coordinate and update detailed cost estimates for IT projects or the IT scope in large projects including network, telephone, and cabling sub-scopes.
  • Communicate cyber security requirements to contractors and vendors and help coordinate security plan reviews as part of projects.
  • Interact frequently with users or project teams to establish system specifications and resolve problems.
  • Lead projects when assigned.
  • Prepare scope of work documents and/or presentations on technical concepts.
  • Provide technical leadership, planning, and direction for work of other professionals to meet project deadlines, technical specifications, and user requirements.
  • Document physical changes on plant communications electronic drawings and documents as infrastructure modifications occur.
  • Research and purchase material for special projects.
  • Identify, evaluate, and recommend appropriate new technologies for LBNL.
  • Maintain the Lab's Division 27 design guide and master contract specifications.
  • Occasionally requires stooping, bending and crawling in confined areas, climbing ladders and stairs.
  • Work in construction sites where PPE is required.
  • Occasional work in attics, basements, crawl spaces, roofs, and other areas where communications infrastructure may be installed and maintained.

 

What is Required:

  • A degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field and/or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum eight years of experience with extensive knowledge working with various types of network, telephone, data center, cyber security, and/or other IT infrastructure technologies.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in a project lead or project management role in an IT organization.
  • Excellent communication skills with well-developed experience presenting complex issues in both technical and non-technical formats.
  • Ability to take conceptual ideas and design specifications and recommend the most appropriate IT infrastructure implementation that will meet customer objectives, adhere to LBNL and industry standards, and maximize value to LBNL.
  • Knowledge to provide sound technical interpretation and guidance on complex computing problems.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and exceed customer expectations.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to maintain accurate and complete documentation and to plan work to meet a variety of deadlines over periods of several weeks or months.
  • Knowledge of data communications and data center concepts and implementation.
  • Should have a strong attitude towards safety and cyber security.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and competence to provide expertise in the fields of communications cabling, structured cabling systems, communications infrastructure, and the interaction between computer systems, communications cabling, power, cooling, and physical security.
  • A successful candidate might have obtained these sorts of certificates:
    • CNet Certified Telecommunications Project Management (CTPM); PMP (Project Management Professional); and/or BICSI Registered Telecommunications Project Manager (RTPM) certifications.
    • BICSI Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD); BICSI Outside Plant Designer; and/or CNet Certified Network Infrastructure Design Professional (CNIDP) certifications.

 

Notes:

  • This is a full-time career appointment, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.
