Sr Planning Analyst
Job Description
The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering (FSE) at Arizona State University is seeking a Senior Planning Analyst to join our data team, producing information used for decision-making by leadership in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. The ideal candidate will have experience analyzing and reporting on financial and/or human resource data; and will work collaboratively with peers in support of FSE’s academic, strategic, and budget planning efforts based on expertise.

Essential Duties
- Serves as a key member of FSE’s data team while working closely with and supporting FSE’s Fiscal and Business Services and top leadership.
- Using a variety of reporting tools and statistical programs, regularly queries and analyzes large data sets to provide ad hoc and routine reports. Responsible for data management, validation, and quality in consultation with subject matter experts. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and resolves technical issues to ensure ongoing data integrity. Compares data from a variety of internal and external sources to ensure accuracy.
- Subject matter expert on financial and human resources databases. Helps to customize financial and human resource reports for users, which involves active listening and conceptualizing to achieve the desired outcome. Works with financial, human resource, student, research, and other data from a variety of sources, including ASU’s data warehouse.
- Performs advanced forecast/planning analyses, constructs models, and conducts studies in support of ASU’s enrollment management, strategic planning, and budget planning efforts. Provides recommendations based on expertise.
- Translates business questions and requirements into reports and other BI information delivery tools suitable to the audience. This includes providing help in resolving data field-related questions or verification problems through written or verbal communication.
- Explains analyses, plans, or analytical reports and dashboards to senior administrators; ascertains requirements for further data or analysis by asking appropriate questions to understand context.
- Trains users to use data reporting tools for financial and HR data. Develops and facilitates related workshops and/or training materials for staff in the use of reporting tools, data fields, and explains limitations of methodology related to problem analysis and measurement.
- Continuously looks for new ways of introducing process improvement. Revise and enhance training materials on a yearly basis. Creates and maintains technical end user documentation.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three (3) years of experience in conducting research, statistical analyses or planning; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with analytical reporting in Workday, Hyperion, expert level in Excel (VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, pivots, and charts), SQL, and/or PowerQuery.
- Experience with Workday reporting tools.
- Demonstrated knowledge of financial data principles and methods to ensure accurate reporting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Human Resources data principles including metrics and analytics that allow interpretation of HR data.
- Experience in a Higher Education Environment with an understanding of the academic payroll and financial cycles.
- Experience analyzing and interpreting data for forecasting, planning, and process improvement.
- Experience in to clearly explaining concrete processes and abstract concepts orally and in writing.
- Experience in downloading, merging, manipulating, analyzing, and reporting on large amounts of complex data.
- Experience in maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive data.
Working Environment
- Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding, and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.
- Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.
- Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
- Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
