The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Optometrist with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute located in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

The Senior Optometrist performs ocular examinations to detect disease or abnormal conditions of the eye. Moreover, an employee in this position prescribes eyeglasses, contact lenses, and drugs to treat eye disorders.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                                                                                                                    

  • Diagnoses eye and vision problems as well as some conditions caused by systemic diseases.

  • Examines visual acuity, depth, and color perception.

  • Assesses ability to coordinate and focus eyes.

  • Prescribes contact lenses and glasses.

  • Provides vision therapy and low-vision rehabilitation.

  • Analyzes test results and develops treatment plans.

  • Administers drugs to aid in the diagnosis of vision problems.

  • Prescribes drugs to treat some eye diseases.

  • Provides preoperative and postoperative care.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS                                                                                                    

Education:

Doctor of Optometry (O.D.)

Certification and Licensing:

Certification in relevant specialty or field

Experience:

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience

Department Specific Functions

  • Performs ocular examinations.

  • Diagnoses eye and vision problems as well as some conditions caused by systemic diseases.

  • Examines visual acuity, depth and color perception.

  • Assesses ability to coordinate and focus eyes.

  • Prescribes contact lenses and glasses as indicated.

  • Provides vision therapy and low-vision rehabilitation.

  • Analyzes test results and develops treatment plans.

  • Administers drugs to aid in the diagnosis of vision problems.

  • Prescribes drugs to treat eye disease within the scope of the Florida law

  • Provides preoperative and postoperative care.

  • Performs post-operative exams and facilitates post-op care

  • Assists with emergency walk-ins as needed to facilitate clinic flow

  • Helps assist in OSD (ocular surface disease) clinic with Meiboflow and Lipiflow as needed

  • Instruction to ophthalmic technicians, optometrists, opticians, residents and fellows when requested or appropriate

  • Answer questions from patient subsequent to technician examination and from viewing of refractive video.

  • Educate patients as to the status of their vision and visual function.

  • Discuss procedure with respective candidates at all screening consultations

  • Discuss alternative corrections i.e. Monovision, Clear Lens Extraction, Artisan Implant

  • Inform patient as to the expected outcome, the possibility of imperfect vision, possible need for enhancement

  • Discuss risks and benefits of the procedure

  • Instruct patients on performance of procedure and post surgical care

  • Discuss any additional issues or concerns the patient may have in order to fully prepare the patient and to maximize the attending’s productivity.
