Job Summary
The Mills lab in the Department of Neurobiology is recruiting a Senior Lab Specialist / Lab Manager to help establish a systems neuroscience research program. Responsibilities will include developing core techniques such as stereotaxic surgery, calcium imaging, behavioral experiments and histology. Additionally, a portion of the candidate’s time will also be allocated to assisting the principle investigator in administrative and managerial aspects of establishing the lab, including ordering of equipment and preparing protocols and documentation for lab activities.

Responsibilities
Essential Functions
  • Develop and troubleshoot core experimental workflows in the lab environment, including but not limited to, stereotaxic surgeries, calcium imaging using miniscopes, behavioral analysis, and histology of brain tissue.
  • Work with other team members to conduct experiments, record and analyze data.
  • Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.
  • Supervise the care of research animals; perform minor animal surgery or collect animal tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • May oversee the operations of student course experiments in a laboratory setting.
  • Assist with administrative duties such as development of lab protocols, ordering mice and reagents, and orientation of new lab members.
  • Responsible for providing supervision and training to trainees in the lab, including undergraduate and graduate students.

    Problem Solving
    This position requires independently planning and troubleshooting experimental technique workflows within a research lab setting. Ability to plan and implement solutions to technical challenges based on information from both literature and practical experience. Work requires exercising independent judgment and theoretical knowledge of the applicable science. This position will include supervision of entry-level laboratory personnel, who may refer sensitive or unusual situations to the incumbent. If incumbent cannot find a resolution, the situation is referred to the supervisor.
    Work will be performed in a team with other lab personnel, and informed by conferences with principal investigator.
    Work Environment and Level of Frequency that may be required:
    Nearly Continuously: Office and lab environments.
    Often: Infectious disease (replication-deficient viruses), oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).
    Often: Exposure to animals, including time in animal facility. (mice)

    Nearly Continuously: Hearing, listening, talking.
    Often: Repetitive hand motion (such as typing), walking, standing, sitting.
    Seldom: Bending, reaching overhead.

    Minimum Qualifications
    Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus four years of related full-time laboratory experience required. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
    Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.
    Preferences
    M.Sc. (preferred), or Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience, Biology, or other scientific discipline or equivalency required; knowledge of complex laboratory techniques, equipment, terminology, materials and substances. Skilled in the use of laboratory equipment, ability to create and analyze statistical calculations and prepare reports required; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills also required.
    OSHA training and certification in animal care and use or the willingness to complete the certification will be required for the position.
