Overview

Due to campus expansion, Princeton University seeks a talented, self-motivated designer with significant technical ability and an acute attention to detail to join their team as a Senior Interior Project Manager in the in the Office of Capital Projects (OCP). Reporting to the Program Manager, Campus Interiors, this position is a member of a robust design and project management team comprising of one Senior Interior Project Manager and six Interior Design Project Managers who collaborate with the Office of the Vice Provost for Space Programming and Planning, the University Architect, Academic Department Managers, University Services, Capital Project Program and Project Managers, and with colleagues from other Facilities departments.

The Senior Interior Project Manager will be responsible for projects that range from small renovations to being a part of a larger team for new capital projects, including Capital Plan 2 projects, with budget responsibilities ranging from $10,000 to $8M. The emphasis will be on academic spaces, administrative office spaces and residential living housing and student centers. The Senior Interior Project Manager portfolio of work will include a wide range of project types, up to 50-60 projects annually with an estimated average spend of $6M.

Primarily the Sr. Interior Project Manager is responsible for leading the project stakeholders in the development of the project parameters (including preliminary project objectives, design concept, schedule and budget);guiding the development of the interiors program in consultation with user group(s) and other stakeholders as appropriate; and coordinating the project schedule with University stakeholders to meet the agreed- upon milestones and overall schedule and cost estimates.


Responsibilities

The Senior Interior Project Manager will manage interiors fit out for small to medium project categories that include residential, retail, administrative, academic, dining and event, and athletic buildings and facilities as well as collaborating on major maintenance projects

  • Represents the Universityâ™s interests throughout the design, selection and procurement and implementation process and is responsible for the coordination of the Universityâ™s efforts and the communication plan for the project, including users, leadership, stakeholders, and external consultants and contractors.
  • Work closely with the University Architect, Departmental Managers and the Office of the Vice Provost for Space Planning and Programming.
  • Collaborate with the Program Manager as well as University stakeholders in the organization and conduct, when applicable, the professional services selection process in concert with the Office of the University Architect and Finance and Administration for projects.
  • Manage the selection of furnishings, assuring that they align with the Universityâ™s design standards, including sustainability objectives and targets. The Interiors Project Manager is also responsible for sourcing and competitively bidding all furnishings with an emphasis on the inclusion of diversified suppliers.
  • Manage and obtain all required internal and external project approvals.
  • Manage project scheduling, budgets and set-up with sub-contractors, vendors and consultants. Track and report on financial performance of projects to senior management
  • Prepare project scopes, negotiate contracts and fees, and coordinate bidding process and analysis. Ensure projects conform to contract and approved scope.
  • Maintain furniture and interior design standards. Drive value engineering exercises to continuously improve design standards and mitigate unnecessary costs.
  • Direct, organize, and mentor junior staff with responsibility to oversight.

  • Manage all phases of small and large interior design projects through 30% the entire project lifecycle, including project set-up, cost estimates, design, installation administration and post occupancy. Work in collaboration with capital project teams, managing internal and external designers to ensure that University goals and standards are met.

  • Conduct project design reviews during key design phases with Interior Design Project Managers, driving design consistency across campus and adherence to design standards.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of strong interior design experience with involvement in all phases of the interior design process, including leadership, and can demonstrate creative involvement with strong project and organizational management skills.
  • Experience managing a minimum of 2-3 direct reports, including the hiring, mentoring, annual evaluations and career development for each staff member.
  • Minimum of Bachelorâ™s degree in Architecture or Interior Design.
  • NCIDQ certified.
  • Diverse interior design experience including a minimum of seven years project lead and management.
  • Ability to excel in a complex, active environment where priorities require continuous monitoring and adjustments.
  • The ability to prioritize is extremely critical especially during the academic breaks when the workload will increase substantially.
  • Ability to successfully execute multiple projects simultaneously and quickly, maintaining interior design standards, budgets and records, and reporting to team leadership
  • Strong project management skills including defining scope, preparing and managing project budgets and bringing projects in on schedule. Has the ability to lead and successfully work within a cross functional team
  • Experience in programming and conducting user group data collection interviews, establishing space, finishes and furnishings requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of materials and specifications, furniture sourcing and vendor resources.
  • Ability to select, specify and develop finish palettes and prepare furniture specifications and bid packages, including the leveling of the bid packages. Working knowledge of construction details and millwork.
  • Highly developed communication and presentation skills, specifically with senior management, clients and consultants.
  • Have a general knowledge of applicable building codes, sustainability, wellness and ADA requirements.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit and all Adobe programs, Sketch-Up, In-Design and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint) and willingness to learn new technology.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Higher education design experience, studio and/or in-house.
  • LEED certified.
  • Licenses and Professional Accreditation. WELL AP, CPM certification.
  • Basic knowledge of Revit and BIM.
