Job Summary
This Senior Genetic Counselor will work within a thriving and fast‐paced clinical environment and provide outpatient genetic counseling services to a variety of pediatric patients with diverse referral indications. Will work within a robust genetic counseling team, attend weekly division‐wide meetings, supervise genetic counseling interns, see patients in the exome consenting clinic, and serve as genetic counselor on page once a week to answer general clinical inquires. Together with an attending physician, will co‐direct the Advanced Human Genetics course, a yearlong weekly core education series provided to genetics fellows training in the Harvard Medical School Genetics Training Program (HMSGTP). This position also includes a managerial role, supervising a team that processes prior authorization requests to insurance for genetic testing, and metabolic formulas and prescriptions. There are also opportunities for education and teaching opportunities both within the hospital and in the community.
This Senior Genetic Counselor will be responsible for:
  • Implements specialty clinic(s) goals and objectives. Performs need assessments, evaluates and analyzes specialty clinic(s)' overall effectiveness; implements procedures to ensure efficient patient care and accurate documentation in accordance with Department/Division/Program protocols and standards.
  • Provides genetic counseling services to patients/families seen in general genetics and/or subspecialty clinic(s).
  • Maintains collaborations with internal and external partners to facilitate specialty clinic and clinical research objectives. Interacts and maintains liaison with staff, faculty, and outside/community agencies. Ensures compliance with clinical standards of care and research best practices.
  • Trains, oversees, and evaluates physicians, genetic counselors, other clinical/research staff, and students. Participates in the development and presentation of genetics education programs for physicians, other health professionals, and lay populations.
  • Coordinates operations of research studies in compliance with department/hospital guidelines and federal regulations including HIPAA and DHHS 45 CFR 46 within the assigned Division/Department. Acts as liaison between principal investigator(s), laboratory staff, project collaborators, and study personnel.
  • Participates in identifying and preparing applications for grant funding and managing existing grants.
  • Collaborates on the development of research protocols, consent forms, and recruitment materials as required for review by the Institutional Review Board (IRB). Composes applications for initial and continuing review for protocol approval and continuation.
  • Participates in the creation/implementation of clinical genetic research policies. Develops study-specific recruitment, data/sample collection, and management procedures, including case report forms and study manuals of operations. Provides leadership to the research staff to ensure standards for participant recruitment, data collection/ management, and quality assurance are adhered to in each study.
  • Collaborates in developing written documents and web-based materials for a variety of purposes including journal publications and conference presentations.

In order to qualify, you must have:
  • Current Massachusetts license as a Genetic Counselor
  • Current Genetic Counselor certification from the American Board of Genetic Counseling or from the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics
  • Master's Degree in Genetic Counseling and at least five years of directly related post-graduate experience including pediatric experience is required.
  • Good communication skills
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • The analytical skills to resolve highly complex problems requiring the application of clinical, scientific, or technical principles, theories, and concepts and in-depth, cross-functional experienced-based knowledge.
  • Well-developed writing skills
