UW Medicine’s IT Services department has an outstanding opportunity for an Sr. Epic and Data Warehouse Architect!

UW Medicine’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department is a shared services organization that supports all of UW Medicine.  UW Medicine is comprised of Harborview Medical Center (HMC), UW Medical Center-Montlake (UWMC-Montlake), UW Medical Center-Northwest (UWMC-NW), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC), UW Physicians (UWP), UW School of Medicine (SOM) and Airlift Northwest (ALNW).  In addition, UW Medicine shares in the ownership and governance of Children’s University Medical Group and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (a partnership between UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research and Seattle Children’s).  ITS is responsible for the ongoing support and maintenance of the infrastructure and applications which support all of these institutions, along with the implementation of new services and applications that are used to support and further the UW Medicine mission.

The Sr. Data Architect is responsible for the definition, design, development, testing and maintenance of Data Marts, Data Warehouse and related ETL systems that support UW Medicine and multiple affiliate organizations. Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to:
• defining business requirements and creating dimensional model phases of the data warehousing lifecycle;
• project planning, technical architecture design, end-user application specification and the data staging design and development phases;
• performing design, development, testing and deployment, utilizing industry best practices;
• serving as a subject matter expert for one or more of the following business areas: Hospital Billing (HB), Professional Billing(PB), ADT and Clinical and Business Operations;
• collaborating with analytics solution consumers, business analysts and report developers to create initial model requirements (grains, additive and non-additive measures, conformed attributes, etc.);
• working directly with business users to define the source application and its data;
• working directly with business users, BI business analysts, and the reporting team to define reporting needs;
• designing persistent reporting structures, such as data marts, used by the reporting team and other affiliated developers;
• defining mapping between source systems and target reporting objects.
• collaborating with ETL developers to build the reporting structures; and
• collaborating with the ETL Architect to provide specifications for a robust ETL system.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Provide Advanced to Complex Analysis, Design and Development of Epic Data Marts and Warehouse (40%)
• Define business requirements and guide dimensional modeling phases of the data warehousing lifecycle.
• Support project planning, technical architecture design, end-user application specification, data staging design and data development phases.
• Perform design, development, testing, and deployment, utilizing industry best practices.
• Serve as a subject matter expert for one or more business areas (HB, PB, ADT, Business Operations, Clinical).
• Work with analytics solution consumers, business analysts, and report developers to create initial model requirements (grains, additive and non-additive measures, conformed attributes, etc.

Provide Advanced to Complex Support and Improvement of Data Marts and Warehouse (35%)
• Plan data mart extensions and the creation of new data marts as appropriate. Assist junior architects in planning appropriate extensions of existing data marts.
• Implement extensions to existing data marts using a SQL query-based data warehouse development tool. Assist junior architects in implementing new data mart components, possibly taking over development of more complex components.
• Identify and pro-actively propose and manage the development of more robust models to replace existing models or ad-hoc infrastructure. Review new build to maintain data integrity, data quality, and modeling consistency.
• Troubleshoot data anomalies and performance issues that arise during design and development. Assist DBAs in troubleshooting poorly performing reports and poorly performing ETL code. Work with ETL developers to identify areas for improvements in ETL infrastructure.
• Works with ETL developers to build the reporting structures.  Works with the ETL architect to provides specifications for a robust ETL system.

Provide Advanced to Complex Technical and Project Leadership (20%)
• Utilize industry best practices to gather and document requirements for all organizational BI needs.
• Guide junior architects in implementing new data mart components and possibly taking over development of more complex components.
• Maintain knowledge and educate peers on the Epic Data model and use.
• Support moderate-sized, internal projects as required. This includes planning, supporting project meetings and projects from start to finish and coordinating with the project management team to satisfy requirements.
• Ensures architects adherence to UW standards for change management.

Other (5%)
• Participate in all aspects of improving the team, including education/training of other team members and contributing to process/communication improvement initiatives.
• Work with manager to set professional goals for career development.
• Act as back-up for other team members and functions, as needed.

REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Business Administration, or related field or equivalent combination of education/experience.

4+ years of experience includes:
• 3+ years of SQL development experience, including complex query optimization & performance tuning.
• 3+ years SQL Server – T-SQL and SSIS
• 3+ years' experience with the design and development of scalable ETL solutions.
• 1+ years' experience working with Epic’s Cogito stack including Clarity or Caboodle.
• Extensive experience with modeling methodologies and demonstrated understanding of principles for data normalization/denormalization, abstraction, dimensionality as interface, etc.
• Extensive knowledge of how data in a relational database is stored, retrieved, and processed, including experience analyzing query statistics and the query plan.

DESIRED

• Previous experience in and knowledge of academic healthcare systems and/or operational environments.
• Advanced degree (e.g., Master’s, PhD, etc.)
• Experience with a programming language and development environment commonly used for processing data (E.g. C#,
Python) preferred.
• Familiarity with some form Agile management discipline.
• Training in data warehouse development and reporting, as well as business intelligence tools.
• Report writer tool experience (e.g. Crystal Reports, Business Objects, Tableau).
