Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

UNC’s Arts and Sciences Foundation exists to raise philanthropic support for the highest development priorities of the College of Arts and Sciences. Under the leadership and governance of its Board of Directors, and with support from alumni and friends of the College, the Foundation works to grow and steward the College’s $1.3 billion endowment. In the recent Campaign for Carolina, the Foundation team raised over $764 million, exceeding its goal of $750 million. The Foundation works collaboratively with University Development and almost every other School and Unit to maximize donor giving to the greater University benefit. The Arts and Sciences Foundation’s mission is to enhance the College by meeting the needs of its academic departments, units, and centers; promoting teaching, research and service; and supporting the continued development of knowledge and learning.
Position Summary
The Sr. Director/Vice President of Foundation Operations and Strategy functions as the Chief Operating Officer with responsibilities for business operations, fiscal and human capital resource stewardship, and strategy implementation for the Arts and Sciences Foundation. The Sr. Director/VP reports to the Sr. Associate Dean for Development and Foundation President, serving as a member of the Sr. Associate Dean’s executive team. The Sr. Director provides leadership, vision and strategic planning for all foundation operations while following recommended best practices from appropriate professional associations like CASE, CAE, AFP, NACUBO, EduCause, or SHRM. This position includes management responsibility for talent management and human resources; all areas of finance including budget, revenue forecasting, procurement, asset management; prospect research management analysis (PRMA), facility management, Foundation ITS support, special events and alumni engagement, volunteer and board management; and strategy implementation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree required (or foreign degree equivalent) with related experience. For positions with responsibility for direct solicitation of gifts and funds, a minimum of 1 year of professional-level, direct solicitation/fundraising experience is required.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
A thorough working knowledge of fundraising operations and advancement services in the areas of Finance, Human Resources, Talent Management, Technology Infrastructure and Services, Prospect Research, and Facilities Management. Superior strategic, operational, and financial skills with a strong grasp of industry best practices and business acumen. Solid understanding of the advantages and drawbacks of traditional and emerging technology in development and alumni relations. Experience working in a complex environment serving varied internal and external constituents with the ability to network throughout the University, higher education and development industry, serving as a resource and identifying resources. Collaborative, collegial and customer-service focused orientation, eager and able to engage a diverse stakeholder base, and able to build strong professional relationships. A convener able to synthesize many ideas and produce processes that address a wide variety of goals and objectives. Record of creative and entrepreneurial management; the ability to build, lead, mentor and motivate staff; and the ability to encourage change and growth in both people and programs. A strong commitment to personal and professional development, and the ability to build a strong, autonomous, and collaborative team. Excellent interpersonal skills and professional presence with a demonstrated ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization. Strong personal integrity and work ethic. This position requires a high level of discretion, confidentiality, and ethics. Superior communications skills, success in providing consulting and counsel for senior leaders on advancement operations initiatives and experience implementing strategies and initiatives across many activities and platforms.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Leading candidates will have a minimum of seven plus years of broad operations management experience and demonstrated success with institutional administration, finance, or operations. Five plus years of executive level experience and proven leadership.
