Sr. Associate Director of Career Advising

Position Summary: The Sr. Associate Director coaches and advises students, individually and in groups, on issues related to career planning strategies and supervises assigned staff. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter who evaluates students’ skills and industry needs, develops strategies, and proactively takes appropriate action as a result. This position will supervise two people and have considerable responsibility for creating and overseeing innovative student programming so that students’ academic experiences are enhanced with experiential opportunities originating from the Shevet Glaubach Center.
Position Responsibilities: 
  • Supervise two junior staff members with the career advising function of the SGC.
  • Work closely with the Director of Career Strategy Advising to identify and source skill building and training opportunities for the SGC staff.
  • Originate and lead cross-departmental projects between the SGC and other academic and non-academic departments across YU.
  • Conduct career strategy sessions and group educational programs for students through in-person, virtual, and online resources.
  • Support the career community approach to advising; partner with faculty and alumni to provide a holistic career strategy while in school and for post-graduation, leading to the beginning of an impactful career, whether it be a great job and/or the acceptance into a master’s program and/or terminal degree or other professional aspiration.
  • Leverage employer connections within alumni community to connect students to those who can promote/prepare them.
  • Educate students on both traditional career preparedness topics as well as those relating specifically to the fields assigned to this position; evaluate gaps in student engagement and skill sets; create and execute plans to establish connections with student population and equip students with necessary competencies.
  • Think creatively and proactively about professional development and career search experience for graduate students and alumni.
  • Facilitate career events for assigned fields, drawing upon alumni and other industry leaders to provide panels and guest lectures about how their education translated into a career.
  • In partnership with the AVPED and other assigned SGC personnel, facilitate the annualized standardized first destination data process each year as it carries over from year to year.
Experience & Education Background:
  • 5-7+ years of work experience in Professional Development, Human Resources, HR Training, Executive Search, Campus Recruitment or Career Advising; strong and demonstrable knowledge and understanding of assigned advising fields as per job needs; ability to develop productive advising relationships.
  • Master’s degree in higher education, business, counseling, or related field.
  • Experience needed working with a CRM and career services manager, preferably Symplicity.
  • Demonstrable work with SaaS platforms within the higher education space.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to work as both a leader and a team member; to think creatively and to evaluate and improve existing process and procedures.
  • Creative and strategic thinking needed to be able to see past the obvious choices when helping students determine career paths.
  • Must understand and speak towards the importance of building community.
  • Ability to meet deadlines while communicating progress on assigned work.
  • Must have strong and polished interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Must be able to comprehend and follow a diverse set of verbally communicated operational procedures with little guidance or training, self-manageable.
  • Must have an extensive understanding, familiarity, and experience with career coaching/professional development of assigned student populations.
  • Must be comfortable and professional in conducting business. Position demands significant attention to detail, outstanding effective communication skills, an upbeat and energetic attitude, substantial team collaboration, as well as a sense of initiative and a can-do approach.
  • The willingness to meet students and employers where they are at in an increasingly technologically- oriented society; must be adaptable to new ways of doing business.
Salary Range: $82,000-$85,000
