Position Description


Advertised Job Summary
The Senior Assistant Dean for Education Projects at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Columbia, reports directly to the Dean of the School of Medicine and is responsible for providing overall leadership and oversight of key strategic, tactical, and other high priority educational and special projects determined by the Dean that may include ad hoc and or recurring projects related to programs that recruit, educate, and support students and enhance their educational experience. The Senior Assistant Dean for Education Projects may be aligned and or part of greater University of South Carolina projects including or related to the School of Medicine and or the University’s medical and healthcare/biosciences missions.
The Executive Director for Medical Educational Continuous Quality Improvement is a senior staff or faculty member who oversees overall educational assessment processes and procedures for the SOMC medical student programs and graduate programs as well as serving as the primary point of contact for continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities and reports to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. This includes coordination and performing essential tasks related to accrediting bodies such as the LCME and SACS. In addition, the director is responsible for the preparation of an annual Program Assessment and CQI Report for the medical student programs, a key resource to inform administration, faculty and staff of educational program outcomes and opportunities for improvement and an essential part of accreditation preparedness. Both the Senior Assistant Dean for Education Projects and the Executive Director for Medical Education Continuous Quality Improvement are professional track Faculty positions expected to perform at least 90% of their time and duties between these two titles areas. If an MD and or PhD, they may opt to spend up to 10% of their time in direct medical education teaching, research and or clinical care.
Both the Senior Assistant Dean for Education Projects and the Executive Director for Medical Education Continuous Quality Improvement must function as a positive role model and be an advocate to the student body. Administratively, this position must be involved with creating, disseminating, and implementing institutional policies and procedures; representing the School of Medicine and the health, research, and medical professions to the students; advising and counseling students; and any variety of situations that arise effecting the students. Demonstrates commitment to conducting business lawfully and ethically by consistently adhering to compliance policies, procedures, and regulations.
Job Duties:
  • Serves as the Dean’s representative, liaison and or leader of special projects assigned by the Dean. These projects may include working with the Provosts’ Office for the School of Medicine, Assessment and or redesign of academic program policies, development, and assessment (degree requirements/new programs/modifications).
  • Collaborates with faculty, staff, and administration to design, develop and implement continuous and systematic processes for the assessment of student outcomes, academic and student support programs.
  • Assists with preparation of accreditation documents, including necessary follow-up reports.
  • Assists with the preparation of any self-study documents during reaccreditation cycles.
  • Assists with the organization of and education surrounding USC SOM policies and procedures, assisting with timely access to these documents for faculty, staff, and students.
  • Administers a comprehensive, ongoing, and integrated research-based planning and evaluation process to guide, support and assist the SOM with improving the quality of student learning, educational programs, academic and student support services and the administrative units of the SOM.
  • Incorporates a systematic review of institutional goals and outcomes consistent with the SOM’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Analyzes, interprets, and reports on data, including graduate reports and surveys around residency. Reports may include findings from surveys of graduates, residency placement rates, transfer rates and other information needed for assessment, evaluation and planning for programs and services.
  • Works with the Dean, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, and Associate Dean of Admissions, as well as and faculty, staff, and students to evaluate curricular and academic programs and requirements for successful completion of the curriculum including board passage.
  • Develops strategies which include design, creation, and implementation of programs for students and faculty designed to ensure academic success in medical school, working in collaboration with SOM leadership, chairs, and faculty.
  • Maintains an Institutional Effectiveness Plan that incorporates a schedule of surveys, recurring assessments, program reviews, recurring reports, service area demographics (e.g., race/ethnicity, population, college enrollment, student outcomes data etc.), and progress on institutional goals.
  • Works with the Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation to assist in the administration of a comprehensive program of assessment providing information and research results to the SOM leadership team for data informed decision-making.
  • Works with the Assistant Dean for Assessment and Evaluation to coordinate the collection of on-going survey data through the administration of various institutional and national surveys.
  • Assists educational deans and the associate dean for academic affairs in comparing educational outcomes at branch campuses with those at the primary Columbia campus. Provides consultation to biomedical science, pre­-clerkship and clinical curriculum leaders regarding assessment strategies and tools.
  • Assists graduate programs (Biomedical Science, Physician Assistant, Genetic Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, Nurse Anesthesia) with program assessment services, as required. Develops, or otherwise maintains educational program assessments for the MD program in collaboration with the course and clerkship directors and the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education.
  • Works collaboratively with SOM faculty, senior staff, and administrators to ensure that the SOM meets accreditation requirements related to the oversight of the medical student education program.
  • Promotes an atmosphere of continuous professional development and to support ongoing strategy development and implementation within the SOMC. Serves on the Strategic Planning Committee Serves as an Ex-Officio member of the Curriculum Committee
  • Serves on other SOMC or USC committees as appropriate opportunities arise.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Work with faculty, the SOM Curriculum Committee, senior staff and other SOM leaders to ensure that SOM medical educational programs include formative and summative student assessments that are comprehensive, fair, uniform, and equivalent across all locations within given courses or clerkships.

Required Education and Experience
  • Applicants must have a Doctorate with preferred work experience in program assessment and quality improvement. (Or following or pieces thereof)
  • Candidates must have an M.D., D.O, Ph.D., or Ed.D. from an accredited university. M.D./D.O candidates should be board certified in their medical specialty and licensed to practice medicine
  • Candidates must be an established professor or associate professor and have a demonstrated record of scholarly achievement, teaching experience, and service commensurate with the rank of associate professor or professor.
  • Required a minimum of 15 years in higher education leadership.
  • Experience with educational accreditation bodies in the medical student education/health care field is required.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience specifically in undergraduate medical education is preferred.
