Description of Work Unit
The Department of Biology exists to provide a high-quality education in Biology and Zoology to undergraduate and graduate students, and to encourage and produce basic and applied research in Biology and Zoology by the department’s faculty and students.
About the Spur Campus:The CSU System, along with its partners, is standing up three buildings focused on water, food and agriculture, animal health, and sustainability at CSU Spur at the National Western Center (NWC). Within the Spur buildings, CSU will conduct research and convene experts from around the globe; students of all ages will engage with science and technology, and have opportunities for exploratory learning, transforming their thinking about food, water, and health and the careers available in these fields. Position Summary
The Spur Lab Program Coordinators will develop course materials for a hybrid model of introductory biology courses, providing lecture content in an online format and offering labs in person at CSU’s Spur campus. Developing these materials will include coordinating with instructors and lab coordinators for resident version of courses to align learning objectives, devise a test bank, and develop lab materials that provide learning experiences equivalent to existing resident courses.
The Spur Lab Program Coordinators will conduct outreach by travel throughout Colorado and via online events. Outreach events will be coordinated in partnership with CSU extension and other stakeholders to identify possible students for this hybrid model and establish convenient course schedules for these students. The Spur Lab Program Coordinators will instruct at least one session of the hybrid LIFE 102 and LIFE 103 courses (both lab and lecture) and will refine course materials and schedule based on program evaluation, including metrics of student perception and performance as well as program enrollment and outreach partner recommendations.
This is a new lab, new campus, and new model. Successful applicants will need to be creative, flexible, have great attention to detail, and be very team-oriented. The delivery of these courses will need to integrate with the delivery of K-12 instruction in the same lab space (different times of day/week), with teamwork being a key factor of this position.
Required Job Qualifications
  • Master’s or Doctoral degree in Biology or a related field that includes experience in organismal biology.
  • Experience in university biology lecture and lab instruction, including delivery and curriculum development
  • Public outreach on topic related to biology or education.
  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by the proposed start date. The Department of Biology will not sponsor a visa for this position
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Training and experience in best practices in pedagogy.
  • Experience in initiating and maintaining in-house animal and plant cultures for labs
  • Excellent oral and written communication ability
  • Strong organizational proficiency including multi-tasking, attention to detail, and project coordination
  • Program evaluation experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and work as part of a team
  • Prior experience with LIFE 102 or LIFE 103 at Colorado State University or equivalent

  • Coordinate with CSU extension partners to plan effective outreach events.
  • Travel throughout Colorado to hold in-person outreach to meet stakeholders.
  • Routine weekend work. 
  • Host online outreach events to meet stakeholders and better understand needs.
  • Run focus groups to identify needs of possible students.
  • Develop outreach plan to get news of courses to possible student population.
  • Coordinate with CSU Spur PreK-12 education team, Hydro program partners, and other stakeholders on successful collaboration for the shared lab space, experiments, and programs.
