Job Summary
The Athletics Department is seeking a Sports Dietitian-Football Performance Dietitian. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The mission of the OSU Department of Athletics is to Go Build Excellent, Authentic, Visionary Student-Athletes (GO B.E.A.V.S.).
The role of the Sports Nutrition program is to provide optimal nutrition using effective strategies and techniques for the health and performance of student-athletes on all intercollegiate teams. Primary responsibilities include the development and coordination of optimal nutritional services for Division I Football student-athletes and the Athletics Department of Oregon State University under the direction of the Director of Sports Nutrition. This will be done through managing the Football remote fueling station; helping manage the main nutrition Fueling Station; assisting in the daily operation of feeding student-athletes; receiving deliveries; managing sport-specific inventory; one-on-one consultants and team education; reviewing any catering needs in conjunction with Assistant Director of Football Operations; attending team meals; Game Day nutrition responsibilities; and performing other duties as necessary to build support for and add value to the objectives and goals of the unit, Department of Athletics, and University.

Key Responsibilities
45% CLINICAL / SPORTS MEDICINE
Assumes a leadership role and responsibility for the planning, development, implementation, evaluation, and management of nutrition services provided to Football student athletes. The nutrition services include educating and implementing performance and recovery nutrition; meal planning; dietary supplements; matching nutrition to training phases and goals; nutrition for competition; weight management; achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with optimal health and performance; hydration; immunity; disordered eating; and travel. Assesses and analyzes dietary practices, body composition, and energy balance (intake and expenditure) of athletes in the context of athletic performance and health, and communicates results to student-athletes, sports medicine, and coaching staff. Collaborates and communicates with team physicians, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches, and outside practitioners (i.e. registered dietitians, psychologists/psychiatrists, specialists, etc.) based on individual student-athlete needs. Refers student-athletes in matters of physical, addictive, or mental health issues to appropriate department or university resource persons, utilizing the department’s recommended protocol. Partners with OSU sports medicine department providers to address nutritional challenges to performance, such as food allergies, bone mineral disturbances, gastrointestinal disturbances, iron depletion, iron-deficiency anemia, etc.

30% ATHLETIC FUELING STATION MANAGEMENT

Develops and implements sports nutrition policies and procedures. Orders food and beverages for the Football remote fueling station, practices, games, and occasional meals. Oversees student staff participation in sport-specific stocking, food preparation, and cleaning. Tracks and documents outcomes of nutrition services for ongoing program assessment to quantify the effectiveness of the nutrition program and services provided. Based on current assessments, the Sports Dietitian will recommend methods to further advance sports nutrition for student-athletes. Reviews and advises student-athletes and staff regarding hydration protocols. Implements ongoing program assessment processes to quantify the effectiveness of the nutrition.

20% EDUCATION AND OUTREACH

Develops and delivers group presentations, demonstrations, and events related to nutrition for performance to student-athletes, teams, coaches, and staff. This could include team presentations, print, electronic and social media education, and hands-on, point-of-service nutrition education and intervention at mealtimes. Translates the latest scientific evidence into practical sports nutrition recommendations specific to student athlete needs. Works with Training Table food service staff to develop and provide meal options, which meet the training and performance needs of individual student-athletes and teams. Makes recommendations for food and sports nutrition supplements in compliance with NCAA guidelines to provide for student-athletes at Training Table and fueling station. Collaborates with strength and conditioning staff to optimize student athlete training through the recommendation of high-quality nutrition for training and recovery. Educates student-athletes on achieving and maintaining a level of body mass, body fat, and muscle mass that is consistent with good health and good performance.

5% PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Maintains current dietetic registration and related continuing education requirements for professional competency and skills required for practice. Maintains expertise in the rules and regulations of the NCAA, PAC-12 Conference, and the University pertaining to student-athletes and nutrition through active participation in organizations, workshops, seminars, and review of published literature. Stays abreast of latest innovations and developments within the fields of nutrition and athletics.
What You Will Need
  • Bachelor’s degree in Dietetics or Nutrition
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
  • Experience in a field related to Sports Nutrition
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community
  • Ability to work autonomously and make sound judgments independently
  • Ability and desire to perform accurate, detail-oriented work. Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work as a team member both in an interdisciplinary role and within the Sports Nutrition department
  • Ability to instruct, council and direct student-athletes, and to support coaches, psychologist, and food services.
  • Awareness of and sensitivity to the nutrition needs, athletic and social pressures faced by student athletes at the collegiate level.
  • Intermediate knowledge of computers and software.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
What We Would Like You to Have
  • A Master’s Degree in a field related to Sports Nutrition
  • 2+ years’ experience in sports nutrition, experience in fueling station, experience communicating with other members of a sports performance/medicine team.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
  • Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD)
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position will have non-traditional work hours; early mornings, late evenings or weekend work may occur depending on the needs and events of the day or season. Working outdoors on occasion is required, as is being able to lift 20lbs and push heavy carts (with or without reasonable accommodation). Long periods of standing may occur. Travel is required.
