Department Description

The Spectroscopist makes significant contributions to the operation of instruments in the NMR Facility, to support the users in their research. The appointee possesses the subject matter expertise and the creative energy necessary to function at a high level of competence. The appointee will participate in activities to increase, improve, or upgrade competency. Appointees may engage in University and public service. Appointees will carry out research or creative programs under the supervision of the NMR Facility Technical Director.

 

Job Summary


Under the general supervision of the NMR Facility Technical Director, the appointee will provide expertise, user training, oversight, and assistance with maintenance/repair of nine NMR spectrometers in the NMR Facility. Responsibilities include doing periodic cryogen fills of NMR magnets, maintaining two helium recovery systems, training new NMR users, performing routine spectrometer maintenance and repair, developing and implementing lab safety protocols, performing NMR experiments for clients/collaborators, and assisting with administrative duties.

 

RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE-MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the apply by date.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • M.S. in magnetic resonance, chemistry, physics, engineering, or related field, with at least three years of experience working with NMR instrumentation.
  • Experience with electronics, magnets, instrument troubleshooting, and performing magnet cryogen fills.
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience operating NMR spectrometers and helium recovery systems.
  • Good interpersonal skills and experience training NMR users and presenting research findings.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to prioritize work and perform in a fast-paced environment.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:             

  • Ph.D. in magnetic resonance, chemistry, physics, engineering, or related field.
  • Experience operating and maintaining NMR spectrometers and helium recovery system.
  • Experience with Bruker pulse programming and NMR software.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA):

  • Ability to analyze and interpret NMR spectra.
