Position Announcement

Utah Valley University is seeking a part-time Specialist! Working under the supervision of the Respiratory Therapy Program Director, the tutor will coordinate, supervise, and evaluate the extra-curricular instruction and remediation of Respiratory Therapy students who are deficient didactically and/or with clinical practice skills. The RT program tutor will gather data on student/program assessment as relevant to program learning outcomes, etc. Collaborates with faculty to coordinate and plan academic workshops and clinical demonstrations. Organizes laboratory and simulation sessions for additional learning opportunities for practicing clinical skills; plans learning sessions (didactic) and prepares mock board exams to assess student progress. Real-life patient cases will be presented for analysis and discussion to assist students with the application of theoretical knowledge to practical situations, including how to apply this knowledge within the context of a patient care management team. The RT program tutor will demonstrate (1:1) various clinical procedures, facilitating hands-on learning in a controlled environment. Ethical principles, professional conduct, patient confidentiality, respect, and integrity will be promoted by the RT tutor and expected from any RT student. 


Summary of Responsibilities


  • Tutors remedial students didactically (individually or in a group setting) the complex respiratory system concepts that involve anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, gas laws, and specialized equipment function.
  • Tutors remedial students within the clinical/laboratory setting (individually or in a group setting) by demonstration and hands-on learning of various respiratory therapy techniques, including but not limited to administering oxygen therapy, operating ventilators, performing chest physiotherapy, conducting pulmonary function tests, and participating in simulation exercises that allow students to practice clinical skills within a controlled environment.
  • Participates in gathering data for program assessment purposes and assists faculty in planning and coordinating academic workshops and activities that foster engaged learning opportunities and inter-departmental collaboration. Promotes professional and ethical behavior.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy from a CoARC-accredited institution/Respiratory Care Program.
Preferred Qualifications    
Demonstrated experience with tutoring/teaching in an academic setting or professional organization.
Licenses or Certifications    
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential Utah State License as a Respiratory Therapy Practitioner (RCP) 


Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of basic and advanced Respiratory Therapy procedures, processes, concepts, and lab operations. 
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. 
  • Knowledge of student management, motivation, and evaluation. 
  • Knowledge of current trends in Respiratory Therapy. 
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies, assessment, and evaluation.
Skills:
  • Skills in the use of technology that supports student learning, especially related to online platforms such as Canvas. 
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and critical thinking skills. 
  • Skills in RT simulation techniques and lab operations.
Abilities:
  • Ability to create hands-on learning opportunities. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to plan and anticipate potential changes and act accordingly. 
  • Ability to resolve conflict within an academic setting. 
  • Ability to manage, motivate, assess, and engage students.
