Job Summary

The Center for Nanoscale Systems (CNS) at Harvard University seeks a talented, enthusiastic individual to work within the nanofabrication facility as a process engineer/scientist, assisting operations of a diverse range of state-of-the-art film deposition and e-beam lithography and characterization equipment, supporting the research applications of the new AWS Web Services (AWS)/Harvard Quantum Networking device activity.

AWS and Harvard have recently agreed to a joint program aimed at advancing device development for quantum networking.  As part of this effort, CNS has committed to creating an AWS supported, “Quantum FAB”, a lab and resources devoted to increasing our ability and bandwidth to support this research.  We are augmenting our staff to support this effort. This limited-term staff person will operate as the program project manager and report to the CNS Executive Director as part of the Nanofabrication Facility team.   This position will be responsible for the Quantum FAB spin-up, supporting laboratory preparation, equipment ordering, the initial equipment installation and set-up and initial operation of the CNS Quantum Laboratory.  This staff member will fully support a number of activities in addition to the installation, operational set-up and initial maintenance of a new 150kV e-beam lithography tool, a new reactive Ion etch tool, a UHV annealing tool and an evaporator/sputtering tool.

CNS is an open, shared-use facility that serves Harvard as well as external academic and industrial users. Collaboration with other CNS personnel to achieve objectives and enhance service quality is highly expected.

Position Description

Facility Set-up Provide support in setting up a new Quantum FAB facility for the project. This will include providing consultation support for new lab construction, etc.

Facility Equipment Installation Project management of the creation of the Quantum FAB.  This includes instrumentation ordering, organizing equipment installation, and support of the laboratory construction for the new facility. Providing technical expertise in optimizing the Quantum FAB for prototype process design, research, and development.

Equipment Qualification Independently qualifying new “all” Quantum FAB equipment, which must be qualified for operations (to insure optimal operation, also to insure all instruments meet the required safety and all technical specifications.). This involves:

  • Independently working with vendor to ensure equipment meets specific design standards.
  • Running tests processes to ensure equipment runs properly
  • Performing all acceptance tests, ensuring that equipment is running well and safely.

Design Workflows Design and implement Quantum FAB workflows with the AWS team for these AWS sponsored tools consistent with their focused device development projects, which involves:

  • Optimizing the equipment use protocols (with Amazon team input).
  • Building out an operation schedule with folks from Amazon
  • Developing and managing a plan for all the scheduled maintenance of all Quantum FAB equipment.

Develop SOPs Develop Statement of Procedures, (SOPs) and related use and safety documents for these AWS sponsored tools for this project.  Prepare training materials including SOPs and related documents for ALL the AWS supported tools.

Perform Maintenance/Troubleshooting Serve as a project operations support manager, performing routine maintenance, trouble shooting of basic operational issues with the sponsored tools. Work with the CNS equipment engineers to develop and institute equipment on-going maintenance and monitoring procedures consistent to ensure high process quality and equipment dependability.

Training Assist and train AWS researchers and other users of the QFAB facility - Will conduct safety and user training for these 4 new sponsored tools, as well as provide back up support as needed to other nanofab processes.
