What You Will Do

Be part of an innovative team, machining precision actinide components in defense of our nation. The Pit Technologies Machining group is seeking a First Line Manager (FLM) to organize, plan, and oversee daily machining activities in the nation’s premier plutonium facility. This role will provide leadership to a growing team of Special Nuclear Machinists (SMMs) working on essential laboratory missions.

  • Builds a cohesive, high performing team; directs work activities to meet deliverables; and manages the execution of work in alignment with the organizations vision, goals and commitments.

  • Assigns responsibilities; delegates to and empowers others; removes obstacles; allows for and contributes needed resources; coordinates work efforts when necessary; and monitors and reports progress.

  • Provides technical expertise and leadership in precision Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machining and promotes the use of new tools, methods, and technologies.

  • Provide oversight and takes responsibilities for Nuclear Criticality Safety of machining operations in assigned locations.

  • Sets the standard for work execution in adherence with nuclear facility requirements and conduct of operations (CONOPS) standards.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Leadership skills including successful experience in supervision, negotiations, conflict resolution, mentoring, team building and employee motivation, and personnel development.

  • Experience planning and managing the tactical execution of work.

  • Experience maintaining a safe, secure, and productive work environment.

  • Experience meeting quality requirements in a manufacturing environment (ie. ISO-9001, AS9100, NAP-24a, or NQA-1).

  • Knowledge and ability to read and interpret engineering drawings including GD&T.

  • Comprehensive understanding of machining processes, tools, equipment, and operations required to obtain precision tolerances.


  • HRP certification

  • GB worker qualification

  • FMH certification

  • Nuclear Manager qualification

Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field from an accredited institution and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • DOE Q clearance and HRP certification highly desired.

  • Fissile Material Handler (FMH) certification highly desired.

  • Experience with nuclear facility operations.

  • Machining experience preferred.

Directive 206.2-Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2 . HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served at least one year of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
