Special Assistant to the President

As the Chief Executive Officer of Creighton University, the President has tremendous responsibilities. Likewise, the governance responsibility for Creighton University lies with the Board of Trustees. The Special Assistant to the President/Board Liaison supports the President in the execution of his/her duties in his/her immediate office, and is the University’s primary liaison to the Board. The Special Assistant organizes and coordinates the work of the Board, working closely with the President, Board Chair and Vice Chair, individual Trustees, and senior leadership of the University.

Under the direction of the President, the Special Assistant manages the administrative affairs of the Office of the President; organizes activities related to Presidential and University committees; provides internal and external communications; attends meetings on behalf of the President for representation and documentation; and handles responsibilities in a timely and efficient manner, while maintaining close communication with the President. The Special Assistant manages projects and key strategic initiatives and provides the President with updates in these areas.
 

  • The Special Assistant will schedule and organize meetings for Board and Executive Committee; develop agendas for Board and Executive Committee with Board Chair, Vice Chair, President, and other senior leaders; prepare and coordinate relevant materials for Board and Executive Committee; work with colleagues on meeting preparation, including advising and counseling those presenting at meetings; write minutes; coordinate and present at new Trustee orientation; assist with Trustee identification and recruitment; triage questions, concerns, and requests from Trustees.
     
  • Work with President to manage projects; lead, delegate, and help coordinate key University initiatives with senior leadership; assist with implementation and tracking of strategic priorities; ensure President is regularly briefed on status of projects.
     
  • Develop and monitor Board of Trustees and President’s Office budgets; assist President with routine updates on overall status of University budget; work with President on managing strategy related to University budgeting priorities and projects.
  • Support President’s Council and President’s Cabinet; serve as Presidential representative on University committees, ad hoc leadership committees, and University work groups; provide President with meeting summaries and reports as needed.
  • Serve as member of University’s Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) and act as liaison between CIRT and senior leadership; assist with crisis management and ensure senior leadership is briefed on emerging issues; utilize University relationships to monitor possible emerging situations that leadership should be aware of.
  • Handle queries, questions, concerns, and requests on behalf of the President; work to solve problems, mediate disputes, and work proactively with issues and people.
  • Coordinate key speakers and event engagements, including nomination and awarding of honorary degrees, and process for commencement speaker and ceremony (alongside Director of University Special Events).
  • Supervise executive assistants in President’s Office; manage administrative affairs of Office.
     
  • Coordinate executive searches on behalf of President and senior leadership.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested.

 

 


Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree required
Master’s preferred, with five or more years of related experience
Skilled in critical thinking  
Mastery of written and verbal communication, and broad-based human relations skills
Skilled in organizing complex and sensitive projects and meetings
Strong knowledge of Creighton University’s Jesuit, Catholic mission and operating environment
Ability to quickly respond to Presidential requests
  
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Critical thinking, mastery of verbal and written communication, and broad-based human relations skills with demonstrated experience in organizing complex and sensitive projects and meetings. Strong knowledge of Creighton University’s Jesuit, Catholic mission and operating environment with the ability to quickly respond to Presidential requests.
