Job Summary:

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Wisconsin - Madison welcomes applications for a position as a full-time Teaching Assistant Professor of Teaching Spanish Linguistics or a Teaching Faculty IV, beginning in Fall 2024. The main responsibility for this position is directing our large Spanish Language Program. The teaching component of this position will normally be two courses per semester but may have a maximum of three courses per semester. Program direction responsibilities include course releases.
About the Department
The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers undergraduate Spanish and Portuguese majors and a certificate in Spanish studies for Business majors. At the graduate level we offer MA and PhD degrees in Spanish and Portuguese with concentrations in literature, cultural studies, and linguistics.
The Spanish Language Program offers a curriculum based in principles of communicative language teaching. We seek a program director with expertise in contemporary pedagogies such as task-based, community-based and/or critical approaches to language teaching for both second/additional language learners and native/heritage Spanish speakers.


Responsibilities:
Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course. Assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.
  • 30% Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within discipline
  • 5% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of instructional techniques and programs. Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
  • 50% Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 10% Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • 5% Promotion and recruitment for course sequence for native/heritage Spanish speakers

Education:

Required
PhD with a specialization in any or a combination of the following areas: Second Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Language Teaching Pedagogy or Language Education


Qualifications:

1. Demonstrated native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
2. Expertise in Spanish in the U.S., Bi/Multilingualism in the Spanish-speaking world, Spanish for the Professions and/or Spanish for Heritage Speakers.
3. Knowledge of Portuguese to train and support TAs in the Portuguese language program.
4. Demonstrated commitment to or experience teaching upper-level content-based Spanish courses such as Applied Linguistics and SLA.
5. Experience teaching undergraduate Spanish courses, especially basic and intermediate language courses for second language learners and native/heritage speakers.
6. Demonstrated commitment to or experience directing or coordinating college-level undergraduate Spanish language courses for second language learners and native/heritage speakers.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

The starting salary is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
